Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was a cartoonist, writer, and poet. Under the pen name of Dr. Seuss, he wrote many well known children’s books, such as Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax. His birthday, March 2nd, is now the date for National Read Across America Day.
Theodor attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1925. Then he went to Lincoln College, Oxford, where he wanted to get a PhD in English literature. However, later when he met Helen Palmer, she encouraged him to give up his PhD and become a cartoonist. After he quit, he started submitting his work to magazines, and eventually had one of his cartoons published on July 1, 1927. Theodor decided to move back to Springfield and then accepted a job as a writer and illustrator for the magazine, Judge. He married Helen Palmer on November 29, 1927 after he felt financially secure. The first time he signed his name as Dr. Seuss was while he was working for Judge, in 1928. Later, one of his cartoons mentioned Flit, a bug spray at that time, and the wife of the advertising executive Flit saw his cartoon, and asked her husband to hire him. Dr. Seuss’s first Flit ad appeared on May 31, 1928, and it made him famous. During the Great Depression, he made money by drawing ads for large companies, such as General Electric.
Most of Dr. Seuss’s children's books were written after he and his wife moved to La Jolla, California. In May 1954, Life magazine reported that school children were not learning to read because their books were dull. William Ellsworth Spaulding, the director of a education division, made a list of 348 words he thought were important for first grade children should know, and gave it to Dr. Seuss, c...

Icicles are light blue triangular pieces of ice that constantly regenerate underneath the top platforms and pipes. When a liquid Icicle is ‘POW’ed, it will be destroyed, but if a fully formed icicle is ‘POW’ed, it will fall prematurely. Fireballs resemble circular swirls of fire and come in two different colors, green and red, like the Mario Brothers themselves. Green Fireballs are faster and move horizontally until they reach the end of the screen. It has a pattern of two small bounces and one longer bounce. Red Fireballs are slower and bounce diagonally all around the stage. After going around the whole stage, it comes back as a faster opponent. The POW Block will defeat them, but with come back as faster enemies. There is a maximum of four Fireballs on the stage at any given time.
