The Dominican Republic justice system is very inefficient in my opinion,

individuals spend more than enough time waiting to be questioned, delayed justice

and severe punishment when let go. The Dominican Republic has two main values it

always follows which is to guarantee liberty and the rights of all individuals without

discriminating their race, gender, and age along with coming to an agreement

between two parties before a case is sent to court. They try to make going to court

the last resort. This country uses the Napoleonic Code which is a French civil code

that came into play in 1804 by Napoleon. The Criminal Justice of the Dominican

Republic will be discussed along with how the courts, the police, and correction

Being tortured can also be part of the interrogation process especially in

smaller communities were poverty is much more common and the police can get

away with more injustice. “The police and military control justice”; the police in the

Dominican Republic are in such great control that they allow and even encourage

those victimized to beat the ones that hurt them (Schwartz, 2011). “Justice is for the

poor, the middle and upper class are often above justice, unless they have victimized

someone more powerful than themselves” (Schwartz, 2011). When it comes to

Important Aspects of the Island

Some of the important historical events that happened in the Dominican

Republic are in nineteen ninety-three sir Rafael Leonidas Trujillo assumes the

power and becomes the islands dictator, that’s were they got the dictatorship from

and then they become more military. “In 1963, a military coup ousted Bosch and

installed a civilian triumvirate. People rebelled against the new regimen, and in

April of 1965, the US president Lyndon Johnson sent in marines and troops. After

a cease-fire a month later a compromise was installed Hector Garcia-Godoy as

provisional president. Then in 1966, his right-wing candidate Joaquin Balaguer won

in a free election against the Bosch, and the US troops withdrew (Pearson Education,
