It is believed that women who are in love are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain a relationship with their partner. Love is the foundation for every relationship and helps couples overcome any obstacle they face along the road. Unfortunately, after a while, this love that once existed goes away and is replaced by bruises and hurtful words. A relationship that was once a fairytale story is affected by an epidemic that is known to affect one out of every four women in the Unites States, domestic abuse. Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over the other partner (Gellert 168). Once domestic abuse affects a relationship it is hard for the women to recognize the abuse because of the dominance and love they have for their partner. Violence against women is one of the most prevalent problems in America that affects women from all age, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic class therefore it is iimportant for women to receive the treatment necessary to reduce and prevent further abuse. To do this, there must be an increase in the education provided to women on the types of domestic abuse that exists and also on all the help that they can seek to better their life. Screening for domestic violence in health-care settings and support groups that can advocate for these changes are two ways in which this national epidemic can be reduced.
Although there are cases of domestic abuse against men, studies have shown that as of 2005, women account for 85% of domestic violence victims. No child should ever have to see their mother with bruises or in pain. No excuse validates a punch, kick, slap, or burn against a woman. No words are powerful enough to make a woman lose her self-esteem and soul. Domestic abuse, physical or emotional, is an epidemic problem that affects a great number of the female population in the United States. It can no longer be overlooked or ignored. In order to prevent or reduce domestic violence against women it is important to increase the education provided to women on the types of domestic abuse that exist and ways in which they can receive help. This can be done by encouraging screening in health-care settings and having groups advocate for these changes in society.
