Simon Mainwaring, social media specialist, is quoted to saying, “Social media demands a lot of us on top of our already demanding lives.” In this day in age, media has boomed more rapidly than it ever has. Images are constantly flashing on our screens; we are being fed information concerning media on a regular basis. Due to the media it is effecting teens physically, mentally, and emotionally. Media is damaging the teens in this day of age.
Statistically this topic is a big issue to everyone based on the environment. At the age of thirteen 53% of American girls are “unhappy with their bodies”. This percentage grows to 78% by the time the time they are seventeen. (Teen and health media). Also, 8,000,000 or more people in the United States have an eating disorder. 90% are women and the other 10% are men. Eating disorders are usually started in the teens, but may start as early as eight. (Teen and health media). Lastly, one in three (37%) articles in leading ten girl magazines included a focus on appearance, and most of the advertisements (50%) used an appeal beauty and sell products. Self-esteem has another contributing factor in media and the way teens view themselves. Only about 4% of women worldwide consider themselves beautiful. (Surprising Self-Esteem Statistics). Only 11% of girls globally are comfortable using the word beautiful to describe them (Surprising Self-Esteem Statistics). 72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful .Also, 80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful, but do not see their own beauty More than half (54%) of women globally agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst beauty critic (Surprising Self-Esteem Statistics).

One questioned that was asked of her was where you guys nervous launching the topic concerning teens and social media and the way it affects the way they see themselves? Her answer was a surprise. She responded saying “No, it is important for people, including parents to know that this is an issue in the generation and the way we live.” Parents who live with teens didn’t have to go through what teens now do. Parents it seems to approach technology in a softer way than they should. The most common answer that teens get from parents are” well ignore that” or” don’t worry about it” they just think teens can get away from the media. It’s all around us you can’t escape what is over powering the way we live. Butterflies can’t see their wings, they can’t see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can, people are the same way.
