Social Media In today’s world, technology and social media plays a major role on our modern day society. Studies shows that 90% of American adults own a smartphone. With technology having an influence on our lives, the question is does social media create social isolation? Due to the fact that social media is used on a regular basis, social media can cause and create social isolation. With social media, although it can connect us to our friends, it can also deprive us further away from our closest friends. Social media can effect the way we communicate with one another, and it can also create depression and loneliness.

Social media and the internet can have an negative impact on our communication skills with face to face conversations. An article that I found online states that “new research has found that the average user spends 23 hours a week emailing, texting, and using social media.” While more people are increasing the use of social media, our face to face communication skills begin to decrease. For example, in article B written by Scotty, he explains that “the ease of electronic communication may lead to weaker social ties, because people have less reasons to leave their homes and actually interact face to face with other people.” Which is true because now that there’s social media right at our fingertips, we can communicate to our family and friends without having to leave the house, isolating ourselves at the comfort of our homes with social media and the internet. Also “internet communications can potentially displace face to face communications,” therefore causing social isolation.
