Social Media In today’s world, technology and social media plays a major role on our modern day society. Studies shows that 90% of American adults own a smartphone. With technology having an influence on our lives, the question is does social media create social isolation? Due to the fact that social media is used on a regular basis, social media can cause and create social isolation. With social media, although it can connect us to our friends, it can also deprive us further away from our closest friends. Social media and the internet can have an negative impact on our communication skills with face to face conversations. An article that I found online states that “new research has found that the average user spends 23 hours a week emailing, texting, and using social media.” While more people are increasing the use of social media, our face to face communication skills begin to decrease. For example, in article B written by Scotty, he explains that “the ease of electronic communication may lead to weaker social ties, because people have less reasons to leave their homes and actually interact face to face with other people.” Which is true because now that there’s social media right at our fingertips, we can communicate to our family and friends without having to leave the house, isolating ourselves at the comfort of our homes with social media and the internet. Pattakos states that through social media we are, “living alone” (211). I disagree because social media opens the door for the possibility of friendships that would have never been possible before. Before, if a friend were to move away it would be very hard to keep up with them, but now you still have the capability to connect with them. Despite the fact that social media connects us billions of people, those who use social media more have higher levels of perceived social isolation (Primack et al., 2017). More studies must be done though as it is still unknown whether people flock to social media as a result of perceived social isolation or whether the actual site contributes to it. Those who use social media more may be more likely to have an anxiety disorder (Vannucci, Flannery, & Ohannessian, 2017). The fear of missing out is a major factor in social media usage, and other factors such as extraversion, neuroticism, and insecure attachment may also influence this (Blackwell, Leaman, Tramposch, Osborne, & Liss, 2017). The love of social media in the society of today is so strong, one of the most common thing teens do on a daily is check their social media. But with the love of social media comes isolation and spending most time alone since everything is done online reducing the eye contact that teens have with others around them and with their peers, as the eye contact they have begins to be their phone only without limit. Inside the majority of American households rest the unlimited territory of the internet. The unlimited and always advancing possibilities have unlocked powerful new tools in communication and socialization. Tools such as: long distance visual communication, international circulation of personal thoughts, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) have all led to a closer but more distant community of people. The positive side can attribute to the fact that the younger generation seems more in tune with their international counterparts. Youth have the ability to anonymously communicate with others through various message boards, mostly governed by one policy, freedom of speech. The anonymity of the internet has created a community where social outcasts mingle freely with others; a society where jocks can converse with geeks without fear of reprisal. This community releases people from the bounds of their own flesh. Yet, technological advances have pushed society into the next dimension of communication and socialization that seemingly override traditional and more personal vessels of communication.
While with the constant use of these social technologies, less people are communicating in person, this type of technology might be doing more harm than good because with the rise of websites such as Facebook, social networking may be on the verge of replacing traditional personal interactions for the next generation. Social media can make people socially isolated. It is due to passive consumption of social media. People will scroll through their news feed and look at posts with commenting on it. This increases feelings of disconnect because people can look at what others are doing but not share any feedback with each other. It hurts if someone does not like your post. Social media lacks real connection which creates feelings of loneliness and isolation within a human being.

With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
Before technology, face to face communication was a normal everyday thing and loneliness was a problem that was rarely talked about or experienced. People went about their day without checking their phone every five minutes or so to see if anyone liked the status they posted or feeling lonely when nobody new liked it. In new studies more and more people have feelings of loneliness and depression. However, more people now use social medias such as Facebook, twitter and instagram. While it is true that technology mainly sites such as Facebook can lead to a person feeling alone, it is also true that it depends on how you use the technology, either to your advantage or as a depressant.
In the article “Negative Effects of Social Media” Ashlie Brooke Kincel states, “people begin focusing so much of their time on their relationships on social media networks that [it has] become difficult to distinguish between our real life relationships,” meaning that those who put more effort into communicating electronically can eventually be seen as neglecting their “real” relationship with someone close and it can one day become awkward or be as emotional connected as it once was. This can happen because writing through social media apps lacks body language, facial expressions, tonality and even physical contact, preventing a healthy and normal conversation. When using social media apps, people use fewer words to communicate because it is fast and it gets straight to the point. In the 2013 issue of newspaper magazine Social Work Today, the article “Social Media and Interpersonal Communication,” by Maura Keller states, “our interactions on social media tend to be weak ties—that is, we don’t feel as personally connected to the people at the other end of our communication as we do when we’re face-to-face.” Here, Keller tries to explain how communicating through social media apps does not carry the same meaning of building a social relationship as talking to someone physically because a strong connection between the people is not being made.
