New York City, the city of love, right? Wait no, that’s Paris. CRAP. What is New York good for? Oh yeah, business. Everything in the city is related to business. Even love in the city is business. Jay-Z and Beyoncé may be a love story, but underneath it all the relationship works ultimately because they’re on the same level and they have the same standards of business. So I believe love is driven by motives. I know, the hypothesis IS cynical, but I truly believe that in a city like New York, some sort of motive drives each little thing. Even platonic love has motives.
Hov’s song “Heart Of The City (Ain’t No Love)” says, simply, that there ain’t no love in the heart of the city. It states that with more money comes more problems. It talks about since he’s a businessman, he doesn’t have time for bullshit. With success comes the jealousy of those around you, whether they may be fake with you and pretend to appreciate you or not. It says that he’s just trying to do him, and that his only concern is his business. Even though he’s so concerned with the business aspect of his life, he has all the luxuries that he wants when it comes down to it, so he just wants simple pleasures from life at this point.
I consider one of the hearts of the city to be Penn Station. It’s always crowded with people moving around to get places all around the country. The possibility of places to travel are infinite. I decided one Tuesday night to go to Penn Station to explore the motives and forces pushing people to travel around and why. I walk around the station that seems to always have this foodie smell that I can’t get enough of. Maybe because there’s a Taco Bell there? ...There definitely is truth in what Jay-Z is talking about, but when there is real, unmotivated love in the city it is extremely priceless. Love is a source of happiness in life; it’s a psychological necessity. When it’s pure it’s healthy, but when it’s not, problems arise. Although this is the case, people try to force connections and love because of hidden incentives. When this is the case, you can best believe it can end badly. To the girl from Columbia, I hope all works out for her. To Whiny and her minions, I hope no one gets hurt in the situation. And lastly, to the siblings I met in Union Square, I hope nothing, especially not a bad girlfriend or boyfriend, comes between you two. And to everyone else in the city looking for love, there’s no right or wrong place to look, but just guard your heart and try to assess whether it’s healthy or if it’s just motivated.

French Stewart's girlfriend demands that he marry her but he refuses to do so. This is obviously due to his definite fear of closeness and commitment. Another attribute of human nature, displayed in this story, is the tendency to be selfish. When people try to evade taxes, it is because they want all their money for themselves and thus are acting avaricious. Another example of this is when people do not donate to charity. This shows an abundance of stinginess as well as greed. Essentially, "Love in L.A." addresses two main inherent qualities of human beings, the want for love and the constant capacity to be selfish.

After watching it several times, I can say that really the film makes me feel sadness and that Ray and Desnos are trying to say that love can’t be trusted. The man seems as if he is in love with the woman and the woman in liking to the man, but when he leaves she can’t put up with it and moves on. I don’t question that love is really like this, but is that how people women? Are woman so fixated on the idea of having a man in their lives instead of actually falling in love with someone? Or are people of the opposite sex looked at as just another object in the world, beautiful and disposable at the same time?

People will push the limits to what they do for love and it just makes you wonder of how much crazy people are out there and are willing to take it to that crazy level. Social media blows up everywhere when they hear about a story that the guy or the girl went crazy in the relationship and just did something crazy. Well there are two poems that author Robert Browning wrote about love and they are called “My last Duchess” and “Porphyria's Lover” and there are a couple things that you can compare and contrast about it like both have very jealous people and another is how crazy people can get and one that’s different is how they handle it.

In The Great Gatsby, the characters demonstrate that love has no relevant meaning in a relationship without the security that wealth provides. Gatsby and Wilson present Daisy and Myrtle with much of love; however, they both are stunned when Tom’s wealth and security win over the two ladies’ hearts A similar situation occurred with the author Francis Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. She broke off their engagement due to Fitzgerald’s menial job. After publishing his books, Fitzgerald acquired a great deal of wealth and fame, then he was allowed to marry Zelda. Wealth is the key to a happy life along with love, however, love alone cannot provide happiness in marriage.

Social media is important in shaping audience value about feminism through the framework of contemporary media like films, magazines, plays, advertisements, TV shows, graphic novels, etc. The television show “Sex and the City” incorporates “pop feminism” that influences many lives of women. Sex and the City is originally talking about four single thirty-something women living in Manhattan. They are coming to New York in order to seek “love and labels” (Sex and the City). The main theme of Sex and the City is concentrating on contemporary American woman’s conception of sex, love, and romance. As we learned from lecture, sex, love, and romance have a history; they are different in different cultures; they are shaped by gender, class, race, ethnicity, nation, ability, and other differences (Lecture Notes). Sex and the City is focusing on modern American woman’s experiences and their thinks with sex, love, and romance. The four main women characters in Sex and the City represent diversity of gender, class, race, ethnicity, religion, age, able-bodiedness through their different experience and expectations of their life (Lecture Notes). Sex and the City represents that the feminism notions of sex, love, and romance are socially constructed, and this social construction of sex, love and romance are featured in these female characters’ personalities.
Colson Whitehead explores this grand and complex city in his collection of essays The Colossus of New York. Whitehead writes about essential elements to New York life. His essays depict the city limits and everyday moments such as the morning and the subway, where “it is hard to escape the suspicion that your train just left... and if you had acted differently everything would be better” (“Subway” 49). Other essays are about more once in a while moments such as going to Central Park or the Port Authority. These divisions are subjective to each person. Some people come to New York and “after the long ride and the tiny brutalities... they enter the Port Authority,” but for others the Port Authority is a stop in their daily commute (“The Port Authority” 22).Nonetheless, each moment is a part of everyone’s life at some point. In his essay, “ Brooklyn Bridge,” the author explores the “appetite” of a particular New Yorker. This woman is described as staring,full of awe,at the New York Skyline from another borough. She is ambitious and sees New York as full of endless possibilities. Throughout the collection he portrays New York transplants or prospective residents as being driven by the longing to grab a piece of the city for themselves.This drive is a pattern that is repeated in these works of Whitehead. In his essay “Port Authority instead of focusing on the New York ideal of one individual Whitehead focuses on a body of people about to move to New York. Througout the collection Whitehead switches back and forth between focusing on an individual and focusing on a crowd. In this essay Whitehead also highlights the sameness within the people hustling and bustling in and out of Port Authority. He implies that the same quality of brokenness has led them all here, “They’re all broken somehow… Otherwise they would have come here differently,”(15). Even though they are all from different places and all have different destinations the essence of New York has drawn them all here. Colson’s account of the passengers shows that they are all feeling the same feelings of hope in regards to coming to New York. "Love is the triumph of stupidity over reason" Voltaire's famous quote about love and reason leads us to think that classifying love is like trying to catch the wind. One of the rarest things in this world is love that is everlasting. Stendhal's four types of love try to categorize an uncontrollable human emotion. The broad generalization of love into these categories leaves a yearning for a deeper understanding of Stendhal's ideas. Love is not overlooking the flaws of the one we direct our emotions toward, but loving that person in spite of the flaws that make them human. People are ultimately flawed, but it is our desire as a common race to find the good in all especially the ones we give our greatest emotional gift, of love, to. This emotion is complex in the fact that while similarities appear, every relationship is different because people are different. Stendhal believes that "every kind of love that one meets here below is born, lives, dies or becomes immortal, according to the same laws" (pp p. 94). With this idea that would mean that all love is the same thus predictable in every aspect which it is not.

If society and its norms judge that a love shouldn’t happen and that it isn’t real (even if it is) it usually will not work out, it will be destined to fail. It is said that “all you need is love”, but that is rarely the case. Most people feel like they need acceptance and that will not happen if they break society’s norms, even love is subordinate to those norms.
When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.
One may ask what love is, how do you define love? You can look up the word love in the dictionary and find ten or more different explanations. Most sociologists consider love to be learned through cultural experiences (Love). This would mean that however or if persons parents showed them love while growing up, that is how that individual would interpret love throughout their life. When the Puritans first came to America, their concept of love was less of a romantic passion and more of a deepening reciprocal of respect and affection (Seidman 16). During the Enlightenment (1714-1818), love was typically viewed as a rational and orderly experience that could be controlled by those who experienced it (Sternberg 69). Love was assumed to be a rational feeling made by rational people and thus could be controlled. This belief had a major alteration during the eighteenth and nineteenth century when people began to believe that love was uncontrollable and could happen without reason (Sternberg 70). This change in the perception of love being uncontrollable also shifted the conclusion that people were not as rational as first presumed. In the late twentieth century, love became more sexualized and erotic which became perceived as a crisis in sexual morality and marriage (Seidman 66). Love today is viewed as unobtainable by reason of Americans have unrealistic expectations of love, true love, love at first sight, and the idea that love conquers all (Love). As a result of these unrealistic views, Americans have moved back to the concept that love is controllable but not necessary for a “romantic” relationship (Sternberg 63).
