“To have, or not to have: that is the question”. Whether or not Hamlet suffers from the Oedipal complex is a debatable topic with possible evidence on both sides of the argument. The Oedipal complex is a psychological problem introduced by Sigmund Freud in 1899 wherein a child develops a secret intimate relationship with his/her’s parent and feels angry and jealous towards the other parent (Cherry). The main character from the play Hamlet, which was written in 1599 (Schulman), is accused of showcasing signs of this complex. Gertrude cares and knows her son very well as shown when she recognizes that some of the source of Hamlet's unhappiness is from her "o'erhasty marriage." (2.2.57). Meanwhile, Hamlet cares for his mother just like a son would by looking out for her. In act 3 scene 4, Hamlet is seen expressing to his mother his true concerns for her to live apart from her sins so that she can be at peace in her life. He expresses to her saying, “O throw away the worser part of it, and live the purer with the worst part of it…” (3.4, 160-161), this quote shows that Hamlet means that he would wish for her to see how her being with Claudius will do no good for her in the end. The meaning of the Oedipal complex itself further proves that Hamlet simply wants justice and a proper period of mourning for his father. According to Freud, someone with the Oedipal complex would experience feelings of anger and jealousy towards their father (Cherry). “But two months dead! Nay, not so much, not two; so excellent a kind; that was, to this, Hyperion to a satyr” (1.2.138-140) As proven in this piece of text, Hamlet dearly loves and respects his late father.
