In the poem “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, there is a clear theme of fighting the inevitable that is death. Thomas demonstrates this poem’s theme through many different techniques to help readers better grasp the message. While using symbols, literary devices, and imagery, the poem comes to life in an emotional way that lets the readers see and feel the fight against death.

In “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” it is clear that the symbols used were in support of Dylan Thomas’ theme of fighting the unavoidable, which is death, with all the power it takes. In every other stanza the phrase, “Rage, Rage against the dying of the light”(1st Stanza, Line 3) is repeated. In this sentence there are two symbols, ‘rage’ and ‘the dying of the light’. One example of this would be when he mentions “fierce tears”, “bless, me now with your fierce tears” (6th Stanza, Line 2). In this quote, the tears serve as the weakness that the subject feels while dying. On the other hand, fierce is describing the subject becoming stronger and determined to live longer. This oxymoron also shows that even in a frail, dying state, people can be strong and continue to engage in life instead of death. Additionally, Thomas uses repetition to heavily get his point across. Two phrases repeated are “Rage, rage against the dying of light”(6th Stanza, Line 4 ), and “Do not go gentle into that good night”(6th Stanza, Line 3). These two phrases are each repeated every other stanza. Both of these sentences equally emphasize the theme of fighting death. Not only does the phrase itself emphasize fighting for a longer life, but the repetition of the phrase accentuates the meaning even more.
