In the novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?,” Philip K.Dick, the author, brings upon the idea of whether empathy is an ability that makes up humanity and possibly androids who may be “humans” as well. Throughout the novel, Rick and other humans mark the idea that the androids are different from them from their lack of empathy. They are unable to have feelings toward or anyone or anything else like the humans claim too. However, the Nexus 6 androids are released to be able to learn how to empathize which becomes a difficult idea to get through each person in the novel. In addition, after the World War took place, Mercerism, became the most popular religion of humanity. A virtual reality device was created in order to give the users a chance to use empathy to share an experience while walking up a hill with Mercer so that their thoughts and feelings could be intertwined. That meant that everyone had to be responsible for one animal, which allowed humanity to show its feelings and empathy by taking care of the animal however one could. By owning and caring for an animal, a person’s social status would be in effect, and that was why asking if one’s animal was real was something humanity did not do. For example, Rick had been a bounty hunter whose job was to “retire” the androids who had escaped to Earth. Rick, however wanted to buy a big animal with money that he earned so that he could make more of his social status. Rick had a fake electric sheep beforehand and this showed he would lack empathy because if others knew they would make it seem as if he didn’t want to care for animal and would lower his social status as
