Diversity Statement - The Appalachian Mountains
I was raised in an ultra-conservative Pentecostal Holiness church in the Appalachian Mountains. There were snake handlers in our church. It was thought that it tested one's faith to pick up a poisonous snake -- God wouldn't allow it to bite you if you had faith. However, I was always afraid that to pick up a snake would greatly increase God's propensity to smite me via death by snakebite. I did not have enough faith. I've never encountered a miracle -- I've never had a dream come true. I therefore can't help but lack faith.
To my great fortune, I've had many people help me along the way who didn't have to and who stood nothing to gain by helping me. Teachers gave me after-hours help; when I didn't know how I would pay for school, the financial aid office gave me a scholarship. These people helped me for no reason other than the mere fact that I am a human being, worthy of help when in need. Although I didn't have faith, they gave me hope.
This is why I have worked at a local homeless shelter for the past two years. I feel like I can do the same thing -- help a person or two merely on the basis of our shared humanity. I enjoy paying back some of the help society has given me. I teach a computer class at the shelter, but everyone gets free therapy on the side. Most of those people aren't different in some essential way from the homed or those who have jobs, but life has often dealt them a losing hand to begin with. I tell them that I also had a losing hand, but I never gave up hope. Often, hope is all I had -- but it was enough to keep me pressing onward.
...ing", many habitats are preserved and even if a tree is cut, there are others in the area that are available for animals to inhabit.
Every year, over nine million hikers and adventure seekers travel to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park making it the most visited national park in the United States. There are abundant reasons for this, but many popular reasons include over 150 hiking trails extending over 850 miles, a large portion of the Appalachian Trail, sightseeing, fishing, horseback riding, and bicycling. The park houses roughly ten thousand species of plants and animals with an estimated 90,000 undocumented species likely possible to be present. It is clear why there was a pressing interest in making all this land into a national park. My research was started by asking the question; how did the transformation of tourism due to the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park affect surrounding cities such as Gatlinburg and Sevier County, and in return, its effect on the popularity of the park?
Once in a while helping those in need can be very beneficial. People are not the only ones that need to survive. Plants need to survive because without them we would not be able to breath. At school I had to think of a place to do some charity work. Since everyone was going to do theirs based off of people, I along with two of my friends decided to work at a place called Shade Tree. Shade Tree is an organization which helps our environment and helps keep the environment clean and well organized. Shade Tree helped me learn a lot and it was a very great hands on experience.
Volcanoes are one of the most terrifying and spine-chilling natural calamities that is known to mankind. It is a constant reminder of the fearsome power of Mother Nature.
Volcanoes can be one of the most destructive forces on Earth. It is estimated that some
The support I have always had has been from my parents, but the one person that has really pushed me has been my mom. In the moments that I felt really lost and in doubt she was there to inspire me to get up again, and keep going. At school, I had Ms.K go out of her way just to make sure I received the resources that I needed to apply to colleges. I also had the support of Ms.Wagner who informed me of things and always made sure I knew a different perspective on things. Ms. Muirhead on the other hand fed my curiosity and made sure I had answers to my questions. Mr.Stolte gave me the opportunity of participating in “We The People” and this experience allowed me to define what I wanted to become. Although, Mr.Stolte and I disagreed on various subjects throughout this experience, I never lost the chance of being challenged and learning from it. My friends also believed in me and supported me, like my friend Carlos Navarro, who I am proud to recognize as a hard working person. He realized his true potential and put that into effect and is graduating today as well. His dedication motivated me to do the same. I am really grateful towards all the people that helped me get here and I hope I keep making you
Giving to the homeless not only gives hope to others but it also makes you feel good about yourself. It makes you feel proud that your giving someone else a chance to a better life. A writer once said, “Help someone achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours.” You don’t only feel proud of yourself
I went to the grocery store and got cases of water, bags of bread, and stuff to make the sandwiches. I had finished preparing the bags and each had granola bars, fruit, ham and cheese sandwiches, water, toothpaste, and other hygiene products. My dad and I had arrived outside the homeless shelter and were ready to pass the bags out as we saw the swarm of people. Hundreds maybe even thousands of people gathered sitting in what little shade there was. I knew we had a homeless problem, but not to this extent and the bags I had made were going to make little to no difference on the vast amount of people that had been sitting outside. I was a little disappointed at first to be completely honest because I was not prepared for that many people. If I would have known there would have been so many people I would have made more bags. We drove around the block planning on what we were going to do and saw some tents set up. My dad and I were curious as to what they were, so we got out the car and saw that these people had been giving people food and I walked up to them and asked if there was any way I could help them. These people in the tents were actually an organization called Open Arms Outreach and a few girls scouts. They gladly let us help and we brought a few cases of water and the bags I had made and helped pass them out. The organization Open Arms Outreach
Imagine being homeless, having nowhere to live and nothing to eat. Being in a place where they feel like no one cares. Even to this day, homeless people are dealing with a traumatic stage in their life where they feel like there’s no hope for them, but that can change. If there was anything that I could do to change the world, I would help the homeless by showing them love and support.
Being a part of the red cross club and the student ambassador club fuels my passion to aid people in need. Making Christmas cards for soldiers, answering questions parents may have at freshmen orientation and helping out the librarians at the school library creates a feeling in the pit of my stomach that is both deserving and addicting. Other students volunteer at hospitals and although I did not have the opportunity to, I feel that volunteering at my school and at various locations around New York city is rewarding enough. As a result of my volunteering experiences, I periodically attempt to help anyone who needs it. Many people believe that I am too generous because of this but because I live
This is why I am writing about it. Although, everyone goes through hard times, there are not many people out there who relate to me. That is why it was hard to get help when it was needed. Maybe someone can learn from my experience and be just as strong as I am. I was very excited to take a new step in my life, college.
Geothermal energy uses heat energy from magma to run power plants and warm water in some volcanic areas
Acid rain is becoming an increasing dilemma due to pollution made from erupting volcanoes, rotting vegetation, and most importantly, the burning of fossil fuels. It has been linked to the corruption of lakes and streams, a decrease in fish and wildlife populations, and human health risks. Not only does it endanger aquatic fish and wildlife but acid rain is also known for the destruction of man-made structures. This phenomenon is becoming a growing concern as the consequences of human pollution are being observed through it. Although the results of acid rain cannot be negated, there are precautions that can be taken in order to prevent further destruction of the environment.
The fruits of citrus plants are known to grow on evergreen trees in subtropical areas worldwide that produce fruits with a variety of colors and shapes. Cross sections of the fruit show several identifiable layers. The outermost skin or rind, which normally exhibits a bright yellow or orange color, is the endocarp or flavedo. The endocarp protects the fruit from damage while secreting essential oils that give the fruit its characteristic odor (UNCTAD 2014). A white, spongy tissue known as the mesocarp (albedo) forms the second layer; it makes up the peel of the fruit and is typically removed before consumption (UNCTAD 2014)....
I had allowed my very own insecurities and the words of someone else to keep me from fulfilling my dreams and from experiencing the possibilities that were ahead of me. I had shut down all of my plans without even giving them a shot! Soon after making this realization, I decided to recommit myself. I asked myself, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” I definitely did not have the money or the grades at the time, but I refused to give up on myself. If things didn’t turn out how I wanted them to, at least, I could say that I never gave up on myself. I began to work on myself academically, spiritually and emotionally. First, after asking my school guidance counselor for assistance, I started taking online courses and spending all of my weekends studying and catching up on my school work, which had a great impact on my grades and GPA. Then, I began to faithfully attend my local church, where I made wonderful friends who got me out of my shell of insecurities. I also met church leaders who pushed me to be the best that I could be, not just for myself, but for God as well. Now, this definitely did not happen overnight, I spent a whole year fighting my way out of the dark miserable hole I was in, but with dedication, persistence, and God’s strength, I was able to persevere through it
