The divergent film series evolved from the book series of the same name written by Veronica Roth. The series centers around a sixteen-year-old girl, Beatrice, that lives in a dystopian society which has been divided into five factions based on their core Values. The five factions include Amity, values harmony, kindness, and taking care of the land; Candor, values honesty and order; Erudite, values knowledge and logic; Abnegation, values selflessness, and generosity; and Dauntless, values bravery and freedom. Each faction has a unique social role in society, for example, Abnegation controls the government while Dauntless acts as the protectors of the society. The factions were believed to have been created as an attempt to maintain harmony …show more content…
Teens can choose to remain in the faction of their birth or adopt the values and beliefs of a new faction. If the individual chooses to adopt a different faction, they must also abandon all ties to their birth faction and family. When individuals are unable to fit perfectly into a faction because they possess more than one value and/or quality, they are labeled as divergents and viewed as social deviants. Since divergents do not easily conform to authority, they are viewed as threats to society and negatively sanctioned by the governing body. These individuals are subject to harsh discrimination and are denied the basic rights of citizens that live within factions. Throughout the series, Tris must discover her true self-identity while avoiding the consequences of being …show more content…
The test reveals the individual's internal/core value that determines the appropriate faction for the individual. Unlike the theory of biological determinism this society does not believe human characteristics, physical and mental, are determined at the time of conception through hereditary means. Instead, the divergent series portrays the idea that human values and actions are pliable and are not derived from familial ties. If the teen decides to join a faction different from the faction to which they were born, they must remain in that particular faction for the entirety of their lives, leaving behind previously learned values, behaviors, and beliefs, along with their relationship with their family to adopt the values of their new "family" through assimilation. According to our text, a family is a group of individuals related to one another by blood ties, marriage, or adoption, who form an economic unit. Completely abandoning the views and values that have been instilled in the individual since birth poses an extreme threat to the system. Since children internalize certain views that are presented throughout their lives, it is virtually impossible to completely dismiss the values of their birth faction. If the teen chooses a faction and is later deemed unfit, he/she is exiled to a deviant subculture labeled the "factionless". In addition, the faction system does not have any moral
Tris changes from being unsure and weak to a strong, brave, and determined in the book, Divergent. In the beginning of the story, Tris thinks she is not selfless enough to be in Abnegation. She is even more confused as her aptitude test determines she is divergent, a person who has more than one personality type who is suited for more than one faction. As she transfers to Dauntless, Tris realizes that she is at a disadvantage in Stage One, which involved physical activity. She is short and scrawny, and she doesn’t excel in an of the exercises alongside losing the fights. This threatens her chance of passing initiation. As a result of this sudden change, Tris misses her caring family. However, Tris doesn’t mourn and drown in self-pity. Instead,
A social institution can shape individual behaviors because it can get someone used to having their life controlled daily. If someone’s actions are controlled and limited daily, they will get used to it and will seek to continue being controlled. For example, if one is used to receiving orders they will continue following through with the orders because that is what they were trained to do. In the article, “Anybody’s Son Will Do”, Dyer describes ways total institutions shape individual behaviors by explaining the method marines use to recruit new soldiers for war. When joining the marines, the methods marines use to shape the behavior of civilians begins at Parris Island when the civilians are intentionally picked up late in the day to ensure that when they arrive at Parris Island, they are tired enough to receive shock treatment. After their arrival at Parris Island, the civilians are not allowed to step outside the controlled environment until they graduate
Divergent was officially released in October 2013- as well as the other books. The plot is about a 16-year-old girl named Beatrice in which the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago- where Veronica currently lives- that is separated into 5 groups called factions ( Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor, and Dauntless). Tris is Abnegation-born but takes an aptitude test where she chooses to become Dauntless. Because she is Divergent (consisting of Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite), she must keep it a secret from her Dauntless leaders to protect herself from being hunted down...to her death. Between the pages, she begins to explore her true identity within a society that defines its citizens by social and personality. It also contains a romantic subplot between herself and
The lack of full emotional development of adolescents can lead to confusion and pressure while making life-or-death decisions during serious situations such as war. Along with being forced into war, living in inferiority to an overpowering presence only enrages the teenagers and their families more about the situation. Suzanne Collins depicts this class difference by writing, “Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch- this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand at surviving another rebellion” (18). The districts are outraged by the idea of forcing children into a violent atmosphere in which they have to fight each other for their lives.
In the beginning of the book Tris has to make a very tough choice of which faction to go to. She has a very hard choice because her aptitude test results did not tell her just one faction she is most like. This choice can affect her life. Veronica writes “ I stare into my own eyes for a moment. Today is the day of the aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in. And tomorrow, at the Choosing
Religion reinforces the beliefs of individuals within a society. Additionally, religion has played a vital role in society since it influenced the way they lived and the rituals they may or may not have practiced. Different regions of the world during ancient time held a distinct set of beliefs, each based on different or similar principals. Deriving from the polytheistic set of beliefs, monotheism came in place of many Gods, holding just one god accountable for the creation and the existence of mankind. Christianity and Buddhism share similarities and differences, but most importantly the impact that each had on the culture is what is mostly referred to.
Although Tris is raised in her parents’ faction, at the age of only sixteen she like every other
Tris finds out about how Four only has four fears and that his aptitude test was for abnegation, but he chose dauntless as his faction. “He says, ‘I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your first instinct. I could belong in Abnegation just as easily” (Roth, pg.336). It illustrates that even though Tris is struggling with the identity of having or not having divergent in her life, it looks like Four is struggling with the exact same thing. The universal theme of when people are trying to find themselves, the best way to know who you are is to first know who you care about. This applies to everyone because many people are confused on where they belong or who they are, so they just need a little reminder. This situation relates to the universal theme because Tris and Four don’t know where they belong in and who they are as a person. The words “selflessness,” “bravery,” and “danger” has a positive connotation and implies that the author is trying to say that to find where you belong to is a hard thing to do and it might be difficult along the way, but at the end it's worth it because you find who you are.. When Tris was still figuring out who she is, with the help of Four she figured out that having many factions is ok and being divergent is unique. The universal theme clearly shows that when you are struggling to find yourself or where you belong in, it’s best to welcome people to help you figure it
Although discarded in both societies, the Proles in 1984 and the Factionless in Divergent have the power and number to overthrow any faction or party. In both novels, the higher classes look down upon these groups as weak, poor, dirty, and hungry individuals. Due to the fact that the other parties neglect and reject both of these groups, they live free from the rules of Big Brother and the Faction leaders. In Orwell’s 1984, the Proles make up 80% of the population, but spend most of their time working for the society. Unlike the Proles, the Factionless consists of individuals incapable of adjusting to one of the factions in their society, leaving them on the streets with no job or place to live. Ironically, both groups have the potential to overthrow any Faction or the Party, but the Parties and factions still view them as harmless and
The five factions in Divergent’s serve as values that citizen can aspire to achieve in their fullest. The fearless are drawn to Dauntless, the intelligent to Erudite, the kind to Amity, the honest to Candor, and the selfless to Abnegation. I do not think that only these factions represent every basic personality type, nor fulfill all of people’s basic needs. To fill in the gaps, I would create factions for the selfish and manipulative, among others.
The Change in Modern Religion “In modern society religious beliefs and religious behaviors are changing rather than declining” Assess the argument for and against this view. The term Modern Religion in this essay will refer to the religion in the 20th century (i.e. from the 1900’s). Also to reduce confusion I will focus mainly on religion within the UK I will term the phrase religious beliefs and religious behaviors to be related with the exclusive definition of religion. Which means a belief in god or a high being and participating in religious practice.
I predict that Tris will discover that Four is also a Divergent, and they will start a rebellion together at the end of this book and beginning of the next one. I think that Four is a Divergent because of how he knew quite quickly that Tris was a Divergent. He didn’t have to scrutinize her he discovered it with ease. If he is not Divergent, then he must have known someone who was. “ ‘What?’ I demand. ‘You’re Divergent,’ he replies. I stare at him, fear pulsing through me like
Religion is intertwined with culture, economics, politics, and modern social relationships on every dimension. Whether you attend a cathedral, a synagogue, or a mosque, habitually, intermittently, or abstain entirely, you simply cannot escape religion.

The definition of religion changes all throughout the world. A neighbor, a coworker, a traveler, a student studying abroad would provide all sorts of different views and opinions on what religion means to them. It can be difficult at times to relate to other religions and provide factual information that has no bias and fully demonstrates the religion but it is important to find a common ground between factual and bias to create a better perception of what religion has to offer others. When narrowing in on three certain religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, there are similarities in beliefs or doctrines but they may symbolize for completely different things.
