Organized killers are considered the most difficult to apprehend because they are very meticulous and plan out every aspect of their crimes well in advance, in order to ensure that they will not get caught. They are usually well-above average intelligence, which helps them when they are carrying out the crime in order to prevent themselves from leaving behind evidence which might be considered incriminating. Organized killers will often spend several days trying to pick out the perfect target for their crime, and then once they have chosen someone, they will use a ruse in order to take them somewhere where they can carry out the act (Crime Museum). They are usually of low intelligence, and have poor social skills. They tend to not have many close family or friends. Their murders are not planned out beforehand, rather, they are done on impulse. The victims are chosen at random, whenever the killer sees an opportunity (Crime Museum). After committing a crime, he will often leave the scene very sloppy. He might leave the body or the murder weapon behind for law enforcement to find (Marshall). He also might leave DNA evidence behind which could be used to determine his identity and lead to his capture. They often believe that their acts are for the good of society as a whole. Victims of these killers include prostitutes, those of the lgbt community, and members of religions differing from those of the killer (Crimes lab). They may also be committing their crimes out of a need for revenge. Disorganized serial killers are the complete opposite because their crimes are usually spontaneous and their crime scenes are always filled with evidence. Shawcross would be a perfect example of an organized killer because all of his murders were calculated carefully. The sentencing of underage criminals has remained a logistical and moral issue in the world for a very long time. The issue is brought to our perspective in the documentary Making a Murderer and the audio podcast Serial. When trying to overcome this issue, we ask ourselves, “When should juveniles receive life sentences?” or “Should young inmates be housed with adults?” or “Was the Supreme Court right to make it illegal to sentence a minor to death?”. There are multiple answers to these questions, and it’s necessary to either take a moral or logical approach to the problem.
As years go on so will the research on serial killers and hopefully we as a society will fully understand them and one day be able to cure whatever inside that makes them have the urge to kill. There is no one generic profile to identify a serial killer. They usually are people seeking for a sensation, a lack of guilt or remorse, a need for control, impulsivity, and predatory behavior. No one grows up thinking that one day they're going to become a serial killer. Everyone has their reasons for doing what they do, most of the time it is based off of how you were brought up. Were they neglected? Were they sexually harassed or watched someone be harassed? There is clearly something that was brought out in them, that lead them into falling through with these actions.
Mass Murderers and Serial Killers are nothing new to today’s society. These vicious killers are all violent, brutal monsters and have an abnormal urge to kill. What gives people these urges to kill? What motivates them to keep killing? Do these killers get satisfaction from killing? Is there a difference between mass murderers and serial killers or are they the same. How do they choose their victims and what are some of their characteristics? These questions and many more are reasons why I was eager to write my paper on mass murderers and serial killers. However, the most interesting and sought after questions are the ones that have always been controversial. One example is; what goes on inside the mind of a killer? In this paper I will try to develop a better understanding of these driven killers and their motives.
Often, organized killers are associated with a meticulous attitude and a keen attention to detail, they are highly intelligent and well-rehearsed; furthermore, organized killers wait days (or longer) for an opportune time to kill their victims. Organized killers are able to be socially charming and “blend” in with society. Prime examples of organized serial killers are Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy. Infamously, Bundy would use his charismatic charm to persuade women into helping him while he faked an injury, he is also known for his academic success. Organized serial killers are highly intelligent with an IQ of 105-120 and well organized to the point of being meticulous. They plan their murder’s and think about every detail which is why they normally don’t leave a trace. These killers are found to be very social and manipulate people to get there way.
These killers are usually high school dropouts, live alone, are messy, had an abusive family and never had a stable father figure in their life. Although they do not usually dismember the victim's body, most will leave the crime scene with evidence in place, and do not clean up well. They will normally pick a location to kill or store the bodies that is located close to where they live or work. Some will return to the crime scene to reminisce about the actions that took place, because they like to relive the memory of the crime (Types of Serial Killers). Some will even contact the victim's family before or after the victim's death to play games with them. (Maria) Many of these killers just decided to kill people, they did not have a specific way it needed to be done each time, and normally did not have a “type”.
Several serial killers have a definitive and common personality profile. Almost every major social, biological, psychological behavioural influence that has been seriously suggested as playing a role in causing crime has been thoroughly thought as potentially contributing to the behavior of serial killers (Levin, 2008). The time period and amount of killings fluctuate depending on the individual committing the crimes. Usually, the murders happen in different geographical areas. A mass murder has a separate definition than a serial killer, because a serial killer has a “cooling off” period, where mass murders kill several individual in a single event.
As I mention above the four key features of the typical homicides is that the criminals do not plan their crime but here is contradictory, some homicides are plan like serial killers. Serial killers plan their crime, it might not be all the way through but to an extend they plan their crime. Serial killers follow the three steps on how they kill. First, they interpret the scene and the behavior of the target in a specific way. Second, they transform their emotions into an action and third, the killer needs to uphold his or her behavior (Katz, 1988). No matter how they plan their crime, every crime or every kill has a background or a history to it. Whatever the circumstance may be, there is always an emotion that is presented through the whole process of the killer. Serial killers commonly lack empathy and show no sign of guilt or remorse after they have committed a horrible act or crime. These characteristics are an indication of psychopathic tendencies. The motives and backgrounds of serial killers is a vexing topic. Not two people are the same, so therefore their motives differ. The different types of serial killers are: hedonistic, power seekers, gain, mission oriented, visionary, psychopathic, comfort, medical, organized, and disorganized. Motives of these murderers range from fear of being rejected, to “getting rid of what they deem bad,” or even to get sexual satisfaction from the suffering of their victims.
