Before studying the concept of race, we firstly need to ask ourselves: what is race and how do we describe it? The word ‘race’ is utilised in our dialogue and conversations almost every day. We, as people are being defined through our personal characteristics and our own upbringing and additionally having a specific meaning around a social trait . Unfortunately in Australia, Racism still plays a huge role in today’s contemporary society. One example in particular that will be explored in further details later is racism against Indigenous Australians. This may not be surprising as Australia can be seen as a multicultural country, where many people from different backgrounds are brought together, therefore it is an easier opportunity to identify one’s ‘’difference’’ and create a social trait or stereotype out of his/her difference. Race can be divided into three categories, Racism, Determinism and Racialisation . Race is evident in our everyday lives, we see people judge others based on their characteristics and offer stereotypical statements to one another, which often quickly causes conflict between the community and the society. Race therefore happens everywhere, in institutions such as schools and hospitals to places such as public transport. Therefore, studying the concept of race is important because it gives us insight on the world in which we are in today, our contemporary society.
According to James Arvanitakis, racism is ‘’described as someone’s characteristics but it also has a specific meaning around a social trait’’ . As mentioned earlier, racism is unfortunately still a huge problem in today’s society in Australia. There are however a few campaigns that are trying to reduce the actions of racism such as ‘’all together now’’ and ‘’it all stops with me’’. Campaigns such as these will allow individuals from different backgrounds to express their ideas about racism and provide suggestions on how to stop racism. Even though there are campaigns to prevent racism, it still occurs in our everyday lives, this is because Australia is known for its multiculturalism. Racialisation, just like determinism and racism is a vast crisis in today’s society because it significantly affects the way an individual’s lifestyle is. Overall, it is important to study the concept of race because Racism, Determinism and Racialisation occurs everywhere and every day in our contemporary society.
