Before studying the concept of race, we firstly need to ask ourselves: what is race and how do we describe it? The word ‘race’ is utilised in our dialogue and conversations almost every day. We, as people are being defined through our personal characteristics and our own upbringing and additionally having a specific meaning around a social trait . Unfortunately in Australia, Racism still plays a huge role in today’s contemporary society. One example in particular that will be explored in further details later is racism against Indigenous Australians. This may not be surprising as Australia can be seen as a multicultural country, where many people from different backgrounds are brought together, therefore it is an easier opportunity to identify one’s ‘’difference’’ and create a social trait or stereotype out of his/her difference. Race can be divided into three categories, Racism, Determinism and Racialisation . Race is evident in our everyday lives, we see people judge others based on their characteristics and offer stereotypical statements to one another, which often quickly causes conflict between the community and the society. Race therefore happens everywhere, in institutions such as schools and hospitals to places such as public transport. Therefore, studying the concept of race is important because it gives us insight on the world in which we are in today, our contemporary society.

There are however a few campaigns that are trying to reduce the actions of racism such as ‘’all together now’’ and ‘’it all stops with me’’. Campaigns such as these will allow individuals from different backgrounds to express their ideas about racism and provide suggestions on how to stop racism. Even though there are campaigns to prevent racism, it still occurs in our everyday lives, this is because Australia is known for its multiculturalism. Racialisation, just like determinism and racism is a vast crisis in today’s society because it significantly affects the way an individual’s lifestyle is. The article being analyzed is called “The Intersections of Race, Class and Gender in the Anti-Racist Discourse" by George Dei. The purpose of the article is to outline the idea that race cannot be analysed by itself, rather it has to be separated and looked at in connection to other types of identities. The author argues that the current theory about race does not provide a concise understanding of “human and social development”. The ideas surrounding race that already exist do not consider the “totality of human experiences”. This is where the author argues that the study of anti-racism is "integrative". Race, in the common understanding, draws upon differences not only of skin color and physical attributes but also of language, nationality, and religion. Race categories are often used as ethnic intensifiers, with the aim of justifying the exploitation of one group by another. Race is an idea that has become so fixed in American society that there is no room for open-mindedness when challenging the idea of racial categories. Over the years there has been a drastic change with the way the term "race" is used by scientists. Essentially, there is a major difference between the biological and sociological views of race.
Racism exists all around the world and is a big part of our society today. From schools, to work places, to even restaurants, racism is there because we, ourselves have constructed it but, not everyone can see it through their own eyes because we were all born with different perceptions. In Racism Without Racists by Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, racism is described in a variety of different ways whether it is due to biological factors or simply by saying that racism does not exist and people just need to work harder. Bonilla-Silva has experienced discrimination himself and he wrote this book to show that even though it is not extremely visible like before, such as segregation, it is subtler but still plays just as big of a role in our society as before.
From the beginning of recorded history, possibly before then, humans have found a necessity for classifying and categorizing every aspect of life. This need for order has been used to efficiently organize and clarify the endless details on Earth. This arrangement of objects in groups has also created a very sinister and volatile mindset that some people live by. This associative manner of classification has lead to the formation of beliefs in race identities, stereotypes, and superiority in the form of racism. Racism is contempt for people who have physical characteristics different from your own (Nanda and Warms 1). This concept is often combined with what is called racialism. Racialism is an ideology based on the following suppositions: There are biologically fixed races; different races have different moral, intellectual, and physical characteristics (Nanda and Warms 1). This is the ideal that many people engage in consciously and the way some people think without even realizing it. The only way to overcome this derogatory belief system is to define the meanings and misunderstandings of racial differences.
In broad spectrum, racism refers to a belief that a particular race is superior to another because of their skin color, place of origin or religion. It may also be termed as discrimination against a particular group on grounds of color, cultural believes and religion. Although some people may think that we have entered a post-racial phase in our society, there are still many things that prove that race is a still a huge factor in our daily lives. In airports, anyone who looks Middle Eastern or “suspicious” gets asked for id and taken into questioning by authorities. In our everyday lives, anyone who is a non-white is usually seen as thugs or just simply not as superior as people who are white. The concept of race is an ancient construction through which a single society models all of mankind around the ideal man. This idealism evolved from prejudice and ignorance of another culture and the inability to view another human as equal. The establishment of race and racism can be seen from as early as the Middle Ages through the present. The social construction of racism and the feeling of superiority to people of other ethnicities, have been distinguishably present in European societies as well as America throughout the last several centuries.
The idea of ‘race’ is a problematic concept in various academic fields. In the discipline of Anthropology, the definition of this term carries much controversy. The concept of race that many people hold is in a sense, a social construct that changes amongst different cultures, one could look at different cultures to see racial definition as a cultural phenomenon in action (Kottak, 2000:139). King supports this idea that races are not established by a set of natural forces, rather they are products of human perception, “Both what constitutes a race and how one recognises a racial difference are culturally determined” (1981:156). Cashmore provides a brief definition of race as “a group of persons connected by common origin” (1988:235). However, Cashmore goes on to argue that the terminology of race has been used to reflect changes in the understanding of physical and cultural differences (1988:235).
