Discrimination is the denying of services and fair treatment to a single person, group of people, and or nation based on their nationality, gender, sex, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. Prejudice is a feeling or opinion about a person or group prior to receiving knowledge about this person or group. When I think of discrimination, the first things that pop into my mind is slavery and the holocaust. Slavery has occurred throughout the whole world but slavery in the U.S. is what we first think of when we hear the word slavery. The African American people were brought to the U.S. to work for the white American's for free and where undernourished, whipped, separated from their families and sometimes killed. The life of slaves varied based on their duties, master, and location. Slaves working in the field worked sun up to sun down 6 days a week and were sometimes fed food that was not even fit for animals to eat. Slaves lived in small shacks that had dirt floors and they had very few pieces of furniture, if they even had any. The horrible stories that were told about slavery were often true. Slave owners were paid to get the most work out of the slaves as they possibly could, no matter how they had to do it. If a slave were to be found guilty of arson, rape of a white women, or thought to be a rebel, they were sentenced to death immediately. (27b. Slave Life and Slave Codes, ushistory.org, 2014).The first African slaves arrived in Virginia in 1619. In 1808, international slave trade was prohibited but it still continued internally in the U.S. (History of Slavery in America, infoplease.com, 2013). In my opinion, slavery in the U.S. was the most discriminating thing that has happened here in America. There have been many discrim... ... middle of paper ... ...this bill all took it as if the bill was passed, discrimination would be legal and under the Con-stitution discrimination is outlawed. It is not only the people who are gay or lesbian that are upset about this bill, even most of the people whose sexual orientation is straight disagree with this bill. Just because someone is gay or lesbian does not mean that they should be denied service in public places. When in reality it is a PUBLIC place, service should be provided to anyone who can afford to pay. Service can-not always be given to the homeless because then everyone would think that they don’t have to pay. Under the Constitution, any U.S. citizen has civil rights and this bill would deny many people of those rights. This denial of rights infuriates the gay and lesbian community because being gay or lesbian is not necessarily something that you can control.
