Social class has a large, meaningful impact on the stereotypes people encounter on a daily basis, the opportunities they have for themselves and their families and their sport participation. Those in lower social classes are affected in many ways including physical, intellectual, emotional, social, environment, and spiritual. The environmental affect those in poverty and the working class experience connects to all of the other disadvantages they may experience. Many areas that have a low socioeconomic status experience things like food deserts and noise and air pollution. Food deserts mean that there is little to no access to grocery stores or fresh produce and an abundance of fast food and convenience stores that carry processed food that will negatively impact ones health. This gives those families little options on what they can eat. It is also much more expensive to buy fresh produce, therefore, even if there was access, oftentimes families in poverty or the working class would still choose the fast food to save money. Having little exercise as well as eating poorly can lead to health problems but a lack of healthcare or good healthcare can cause people to make the decision to forgo medical treatment, therefore, low income families are much more likely to suffer from illness than their wealthier counterparts. Their health can also be affected emotionally and socially. Emotionally, there can be a lot of added stress for those in lower income families. They have a constant worry of keeping a job, working extra hours, paying their bills, and trying to get three meals on the table for their family each day. The family gets cheated numerous times in money related incidents. The housing agent cheats them the most, as they must pay much more money then he told them they would. Class can be arranged to economic factors such as income, education, wealth and other factors at work. Poverty remains high and could argue that true poverty cannot exist in a country as rich as the United States. It is clear that poverty has an impact on certain groups of people, while other groups have it easy, but poverty is often associated with something low education, poor health and social inequalities groups. Nearly a quarter of less than high school (23.6%) education live below the poverty line, while 3.6% of people with tertiary education live below the poverty line (U.S. Census 2007). The assumption that poverty is something that adds to increasing educational opportunities for the poor and education overall, suggests that it is very difficult to get out of poverty. Being born into an economically disadvantaged family causes dilemmas before the kid is even born. According to Gulick, “Economically disadvantaged students have it tougher before they are born because they have less prenatal care if any at all” (1). Because the babies do not even have the care they need before they are born they end up being born with things that aren’t good. “Children born into poverty have lower birth weights, and many suffer from hunger and poor nutrition. Society still classified each of us in three classes, the upper, middle and lower class, and we distinguished our status class based on prestige, religious affiliation and so on. Even though each individual has a different cultures, background and religious beliefs, we should not look at the person's race, color, age and sex, but we do, for instance, when it comes to jobs. We do pay the men and women totally different wage amounts for the same education background and skills, even though they work in a government, medical field, school environment or within the community. Class background may be a function of class identity, but eating with friends and coworkers is professional and managerial classes are more likely to eat in the homes of friends than those in working class occupations.
