Different types of batteries

Batteries come in all different sizes, shapes, and are used for many different things. According to the article “Electric Vehicle” it states
“A battery is a container, or group of containers, holding electrodes and an electrolyte for producing electric current by chemical reaction and storing energy” (3).
There are two types of batteries, a primary and a secondary. A primary battery is a battery that can’t be recharged and is usually thrown away an example of a primary is carbon zinc or heavy duty. A secondary battery is simply the opposite, it is rechargeable. A battery has 7 major parts; container, cathode, separator, anode, electrodes, electrolyte, and collector. A container is the outside shell. The cathode is electrodes reduced by the reaction. The separator is what its name implies the separator of the electrodes. The anode is the oxidized electrodes. The electrodes are where the reaction takes place. The electrolyte is the medium for the movement of the ions. The collector is a brass pin that conducts electricity. A chemical reaction occurs inside the battery, than the electrodes oxidize and then the collector conducts the electricity formed and powers the device on. Inside a battery the type of reaction that occurs is exothermic because heat is released. Some batteries that are very used a lot are lead acid, lithium ion, nickel metal hydride, alkaline, and nickel cadmium.
A lead acid battery is used mostly in backup car battery, solar lighting and emergency lights and it is rechargeable but takes a long time to charge (approx. 8-16hrs). It is also one of the most popular secondary batteries. Since they are heavy they aren’t used in portable devices. The advantages of this battery are it is reliable, recyclable, it ...
