There has been an ongoing argument over whether or not the movies are better than the books. The Great Gatsby is a perfect example of the movie versus book showdown. This classic American novel was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925 and then later made into a movie, directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2013. Like always the movie is not exactly the same as the book. For example, the main character, Gatsby, is unlike the original in Fitzgerald’s novel. The notorious green light in the book is dramatically enhanced in the film, and the setting is completely modernized. It is set during the 1920’s in New York City and on Long Island, in the areas of West Egg and East Egg. In the book, the setting is elegant and more believable. The characters are all classy and the events that take place fit the time period. Like all books, the pace of the story is slow and a little boring, but Fitzgerald keeps it exciting with constant drama. In the film, Luhrmann continues to stretch Fitzgerald’s words. The basic 1920’s setting of West Egg and East Egg still remains the same, but the parties and events are wildly exaggerated and unbelievable. Luhrmann uses modern day music and a faster paced story to grab the audience's attention and keep them interested. He took Fitzgerald’s classic American story and modernized it and to be honest… made it better. There are many similarities and differences between the novel and film of The Great Gatsby. The movie is different from the book, but it is a good different. Just little changes to main things like Jay Gatsby’s character, the green light, and the setting in the movie improved the storyline significantly.
