In “Everyday Use” the main conflict of the story arises mainly because of the differences in opinion between Wangero and her family. The differences in lifestyle and cultural purpose creates a rift between the characters in the story. In the story Wangero, originally named Dee, despises the lifestyle in which the family lives in so much that she burns their home and scars her sister Maggie for life. Wangero is considered to be bright compared to her simple-minded mother and sister. She valued other subjects, such as education, over the farming lifestyle that was more valued for her other family members.
