Cognitive Therapy and Biblical Counseling Nouthetics, more commonly known as Biblical Counseling, and Cognitive Therapy, also called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, two seemingly opposed models for helping an individual who is dealing with mood and emotional issues, when more closely examined, possess more similarities than differences. Thus the views and principles of each one can be intermingled with the other for optimal results. To best understand this, one must first recognize the basic tenets of each approach.
COGNITIVE THERAPY According to Merriam-Webster, the medical definition of cognitive therapy is “ a branch of psychology concerned with mental processes (as perception, thinking, learning, and memory) especially with respect …show more content…

The word itself, nouthetics, having Biblical roots, has no true English translation, and is omitted from such standard dictionaries as Merriam-Webster. In Greek, the verb noutheteo means to admonish, correct, or instruct; nouthesia, the noun form of the word refers to nouthetic counseling itself.10 Based solely upon the Bible and focused on Christ, nouthetics “renounces mainstream psychology as humanistic, fundamentally opposed to Christianity, and radically secular.”11 Nouthetics grows out of the three ideas found in the Greek word nouthesia: confrontation, concern, and change. In other words, “nouthetic counseling consists of lovingly confronting people out of deep concern in order to help them make those changes that God requires.”12 In 1970, Jay E. Adams, who holds a Masters in Sacred Theology from Temple University and a PhD in Speech from University of Missouri, published Competent to Counsel, in which the author introduces the principles for nouthetics for our modern society.13 In Competent to Counsel, Adams established the foundation for nouthetics: “The thesis of this book is that qualified Christian Counselors properly trained in the scriptures are competent to counsel-more competent than psychiatrists or anyone …show more content…

5:12) to justify confrontation,

• "I am not writing these things to shame you, but to counsel you as my dear children." (1 Corinthians 4:14) to show that Biblical Counselors have concern for the counselee,

• “All Scripture is breathed out by God and useful for teaching, for conviction, for correction and for disciplined training in righteousness in order to fit and fully equip the man from God for every good task. (2 Timothy 3:16,17)”16,17

Since writing Competent to Counsel, Adams has published over 100 books, translated in 16 languages. Further, although Adams is well into his 80s, he still actively advocates for a strictly biblical approach to counseling,(18) and does admit he and his views are fallible.(19) “Cognitive Therapy is based on the premise that what we think affects our emotions, what we choose to do or avoid, and our physiological reactions. In fact, most situations remain neutral until we assign meaning based on how we interpret the situation.” (see diagram
