Basketball Then and Now In 1891, the game of basketball was invented. James Naismith from Springfield, Massachusetts created the game that is still known today. The game of basketball has changed and stayed the same over the years from where, who, and how the game is played. Basketball was first played outside with peach baskets or a square box hung on the side of a house as the goal or also known as the hoop. According to hooptactics.com, “the first games was played nine players on each side of the court, because only eighteen boys showed up for Naismith’s physical education class.” “Guys were the only ones that got to play until about two years later when girls’ basketball was invented,” according to hooptacics.com.

    Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts.
