As we all know, sound plays a large role in today’s movies. There is diegetic sounds, which come from a source within the film’s world, and nondiegetic sounds, which come from a source outside that world, and are only heard by the audience. (Barsam-Monahan, 2016) Diegetic sound gives us, as the viewers, an awareness of both the spatial and the temporal dimensions of the shot from which the sound emanates from. An example of diegetic sound come from the movie Midnight Cowboy, which right after stepping in front of an oncoming car, which screeches to a halt and honks its’ horn and interrupts the conversation in the movie. A film concerning a futuristic universe, Pitch Black, directed by David Twohy, was scored using an arsenal of techniques that imbued a futurist connotation. The composer Graeme Revell used a wide variety of electronic tactics that screamed modern use of MIDI, as in the use of electronic drums and percussions. Much of the underscoring is as dissonant and eerie as the film itself. The only score that might have fit Pitch Black better would have been no score at all, for Revell seems to conjure silence through low, menacing sounds. Although the task seems as a paradox, Graeme succeeded in using the score to serve the five functions of music very well. The only aspect that seemed to be both a weakness and strength at the same time was the electronic sounds used. Often, it is hard to distinguish between sound effect and instrument; while this can be frustrating to a listening ear, the idea is also a strength, since the feeling of restlessness conveyed keeps a feeling of tension and anticipation.

The sound used in this scene are all diegetic, the sounds of gunfire and explosions show that the characters in this scene are in very real danger of being shot or blown up, this helps the viewer grow a more personal connection with the characters since the scene is towards the end of the film, the viewer has developed a personal connection with the characters and do not want them to die. The diegetic sounds of military personnel can be heard, this is used to show the urgency that the military personnel have to get The Sapphires and Dave out of the dangerous situation.
In 1974 director Mark Robson was making a star-studded disaster film known today as Earthquake. Robson wanted the film to be an experience for moviegoers by having the theatres actually rumble with the film. He enlisted the help of Sensurround. Sensurround installed loudspeakers called sub-woofers into the theatres. During loud deep rumblings, filmgoers could feel their seats shake due to the large sound waves. Today we have seats that move and theatres that can create atmospheric changes like the wind, water, and scents. But in 1974 the sub-woofer was a revolution in the movie experience.
The sounds and music in this film are very realistic, and to the point. There is not anything abstract or out of place, and everything is very appropriate. The sound effects in the film are diegetic (sounds that the actors can hear), with the score being nondiegetic (sounds that the actors cannot hear). The film falls under the category of realism, with no stylizing or manipulation of images and sounds.
Kurosawa uses a weighty sound space containing amplified sounds or unseen sound sources that enhance the images presented to the viewer. Cure's background ambient noise keenly conveys a certain mood to lower the viewer's defenses in watching such a thriller film. The overall sound space for most of the movie has been perfectly described as “unnerving atmosphere of silent dread that hangs over nearly every frame of the film” (Pizzello). Amplified sounds, such as a washing machine or a faucet, are used when a character is left alone in the scene with just his or her own thoughts. The viewer and character share the same experience of having thoughts interrupted and drowned out by means of these sounds. Sound and Editing are two factors that can affect our movie watching experience. They usually work together to push the story forward, determine how fast or slow the pace of the film should be, and what mood should the audience feel. In this paper, we will be specifically focusing on sound and editing of the films Hugo and compare it with the film Amélie, which both at least nominated in best sound and best video editing. These two films both used different elements and techniques in terms of sound and editing that I think it would be interesting to discuss.

When watching a film we rarely think about the formal elements that are being used to describe the film. The use of formal elements in film is needed to convey messages and themes. In the movie mad max fury road and birdman we notice the formal element sound being used to convey the directors theme. Sound can be used in films in a diegetic manner and a non-diegetic manner. The non-diegetic soundtrack of the film mad max in particular is used to dramatize and create emphasis, while the diegetic sound of birdman is what creates a tone in the film. With the use of the formal element sound these two films obtain meaning.
As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.
