Diana Moon Glampers is a Handicapper General government official, she made it possible for everyone to have equality by adding the “211th, 212th, and 213th amendment to the constitution” (“Harrison Bergeron”). Her definition of equality is by bringing the smart, strong, and good looking people down to the same level as the not so smart, strong and good looking people. The government wants George to have a handicap radio on his ear to stop him from thinking far ahead, this handicap radio makes different kind of sounds every twenty seconds. To understand how being “inappropriately female” was coded in Daphne Scholinski’s The Last Time I Wore A Dress we have to understand when this was happening. In the early 80’s when Scholinski was growing up acts of sexual and gender nonconformity were not seen as acceptable ways of identifying. Laws surrounding criminalization of gender identification and sexual orientation were just beginning to be changed and public opinion on the matter was still catching up. Daphne’s nonconformity came from all directions. She’d always been a tomboy growing up, played sports, hung out with the guys, and didn’t behave. She wasn’t the calm, quiet, or followed the rules.
Diana Moon Glampers plays the Handicapper General. Basically, she is large and in charge. Diana has the power of to control the life and death of everyone in the story, and this is shown.
The story begins in the Middle Kingdom which is what the Chinese people call China. Moon Shadow is afraid of the demons, which is what they call Americans. Moon Shadow is afraid of demons because his mother told him about how the demons lynched his grandfather. Moon Shadow’s mother doesn’t like to answer his questions about America. The Tang people refer America as the Land of the Golden Mountain. Moon Shadow has never met his father and the people in the village call him a maker of marvelous kites. Moon Shadow gets to finally go to America because his cousin, Hand Clap brought a letter from his father. Hand Clap tells Moon Shadow about the demons and how mean they are. Moon Shadow arrives in America and he arrives in the Company building.
Imagine a world where the government has finally made every induvial equal in every aspect of their lives. In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., this is a living reality. In this society, the strong, intelligent, and beautiful are required to wear handicaps of heavy weights, earphones, and masks, thus rendering their attributes equal to everyone. With a government constantly pushing for equality among all citizens, Vonnegut reveals a dystopia that society is slowly working toward. Vonnegut uses foreshadowing to reveal the future of society by using Harrison Bergeron and Diana Moon Glampers as mechanisms to reveal the horrors of allowing citizens to be too equal.

First of all, during the beginning of the short story, equality was achieved due to the 211th - 213th amendments made to the Constitution. Growing up in a traditional Punjabi family with both of my parents being born and raised in India has been an experience that I can only fully comprehend now at the age of twenty-three. Realizing how backward our culture is when it comes to women’s equality among family and society is an astonishing thought. Even though there is more gender equality here in America than in India within our households the women are still subjected to live and serve the men of the house.
