The Great Gatsby is narrated by Nick Carraway. Nick tells the story of the things he experienced when he moved to New York City to work in the bonds business. The reader is told the story, which includes Nick’s perception and opinion in certain events. The reader wants to believe that Nick is a reliable narrator and he seems to be one, in the beginning. Nick describes himself as “one of the few honest people that I have ever known” (Fitzgerald, 59). Although, Nick thinks this of himself, there are many things in the story that hint otherwise. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick is not a reliable narrator. This is seen through his negative judgments of others, his friendship with Gatsby, and because he does not know everything about Daisy and Gatsby.
1. The most crucial point in Chapter 1 is the call Tom receives from his lover. After Nick, Jordan, Tom, and Daisy spent a well mannered night together, the phone rings and Tom rushes to it. When Daisy follows behind it’s revealed it’s a mistress from New York. This is a crucial point as it reveals the falseness in Tom and Daisy’s relationship. Although it initially looked as if all was fine, a larger theme of disingenuousness is behind their relationship.
Chapter one introduces Hafid, a wealthy and successful salesman and his assistant Erasmus, a trusted worker and friend. Hafid lives in a beautiful palace with every type of luxury imaginable. He understand that he would die soon and askes Erasmus to estimate the value of his properties and to distribute them among others. Erasmus is now asked to give half his fortune to the poor as he did annually and sell his belongings in for gold. Hafid only intends to keep enough money to last him for the remaining of his life and the rest disturbed to the people who need it and to his emporiums. Jay Gatsby is the main character in The Great Gatsby. He is the mysterious character that the story revolves around. Nick is his neighbor that gets invited to Gatsby’s party that set in on Gatsby being a mysterious person that has so many people talking about him and talking about different stories about Gatsby that unravel how big of a mystery Gatsby is. His honesty and sense of duty are established as he remarks on his own objectivity and willingness to withhold judgment. However, as the book progresses and Nick’s relationship with Jay Gatsby grows more intimate, it is revealed that Nick is not as reliable as previously thought when it comes to Gatsby. Nick perceives Gatsby as pure and blameless, although much of Gatsby's persona is false. Because of his friendship and love for Gatsby, his view of the events is fogged and he is unable to look at the situation objectively.

He is not just one character among several, it is through his eyes and ears that we form our opinions of the other characters. Often, readers of this novel confuse Nick's stance towards those characters and the world he describes with those of F.
