Weather is a very influential and important aspect of every human’s life. It significantly impacts our daily lives and it is also a potential way to make a living. The people who predict and forecast the weather, people called meteorologists, are very important as they inform the public about the latest weather advancements and news. Meteorologists are very unique as they study different things compared to others in the weather/climate field. They also use different tools and, to become a meteorologist, require different coursework. Meteorologists are, overall, a very significant part of people’s everyday lives and science, as they are a great tool in helping to better understand weather and climate here on Earth. Meteorologists research and forecast the weather before informing the public about it, via the media (television, radio, the internet, etc.). They notify the public by giving up-to-date weather developments and predicting what will happen next (in regards to the weather). A lot of work goes into this process, and it involves many scientific instruments such as thermometers, anemometers, barometers, and much more. A thermometer is a scientific tool that is used to measure temperature, usually consisting of a graduated glass tube that contains a liquid (which, depending upon the temperature, determines where it goes). An anemometer is a device that is used to measure wind speed (the word anemometer comes from the Greek word anemos, which means wind). A barometer is a tool that significantly helps meteorologists forecast the weather, due it being a scientific instrument that is used to measure atmospheric pressure. There is opportunity for a larger income by going to a more prestigious market with the more experience that they compile even while they are still performing in relatively small markets. For example, a meteorologist might begin his or her career with the local ABC news channel, gaining promotions and eventually becoming the chief meteorologist at that station. After doing this for a few years, the meteorologist may be presented with the opportunity to move up to a larger weather company, such as Accuweather or the Weather Channel. A promotion to a larger company means the meteorologist would be offered a significant pay increase, as well as a more prestigious position. With a lot of experience and promotion, top meteorologists can earn a salary of over $150,000 per year.
