Why is giving thanks to God important? Think for a moment about the reason God gives us commands. Whenever God gives us a command, it is for our benefit. This principle is clearly emphasized when God gave the Ten Commandants. In Deuteronomy 5 we read that when God gave the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel, they promised to obey all that God said. The Lord was pleased with their response and then God said in verse 29, “Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!” The reason God gives us commands is not to limit our freedom but to increase our happiness. The command to always give thanks is God’s way of bringing fulfillment to our lives. What are the benefits of having a thankful heart? Giving thanks to God helps us to become unselfish and confident. Paul highlights this in Philippians 4:5-7: “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
