Determination is like a sword. It can be used to protect oneself but if not wielded correctly, efficiently, or often, one can wind up being unprepared for the conflicts the world will throw at them. This is perfectly represented in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (LOTR) by Peter Jackson. Jackson shows the significance of determination through the actions of Gandalf, the Ring, and Gollum.
The first character that shows determination is Gandalf. Throughout the course of his journey in LOTR, he shows that he can persevere despite the differing opinions of those around him. For instance, Gandalf put forth a great deal of power and wizardly cleverness to help Bilbo let go of the Ring at the beginning of the film. It was

When Frodo spots a creature lurking in a cave below them in the Mines of Moria, he asks Gandalf what the creature is. Gandalf replies stating that it is Gollum - a creature that has been corrupted by the Ring’s power - and that he had been following them for three days. Gollum’s perseverance lasts the length of the entire film. He follows the Fellowship throughout their journey, until he gets captured by Saruman’s forces. Saruman then tortures him macabrely in order to get the location of the Ring from him. However, Gollum is determined to keep the location to himself for as long as he can, so he fights against the punishment he receives. Eventually he gives in, telling Saruman two words: “Baggins”, and “Shire”. It is important for viewers to understand what Peter Jackson is attempting to portray using the character Gollum. Through the creature, Jackson shows that humanity too often capitulates to iniquities that destroy their quality of life. It is up to every individual to decide for themselves the difference between good and evil determination. From there, society can further
Along their journey, they have memorable experiences and learn about the One Ring’s imperceptible powers. Furthermore, Frodo and his fellowship discover the powers of the One Ring growing along with the armies of Sauron with respect to time. Ultimately, Frodo and his eight companions must do what it takes to destroy the One Ring and
One of the recurring themes throughout The Hobbit is Tolkien’s manifestation of morality through his inherently good and evil characters. Although, some characters narrowly balance the line of good and evil through portraying characteristics such as greed, the hobbits represent naturally altruistic and peaceful characters. The protagonist Bilbo’s rational nature and willingness to compromise through his selfless transfer of the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elvenking further highlights Tolkien’s portrayal of a simple and sensible twentieth century Englishmen in a fantastical setting. Even though he risks his promised sum of the treasures, Bilbo chooses to work as a peacekeeper to opt for a more sensible way of solving a problem. Therefore, the dialogue between Bilbo, Bard, and the Elevenking is a manifestation by Tolkien of the moral high ground of hobbits and their rational and peacekeeping nature, which impresses the men and elves to award their trust and honor to the hobbit.
Unshakable willpower can describe someone whose single-minded and persistent. This meaning their outlook or point of view on a situation will never change, no matter the obstacles or consequences. In Sophocles’ Antigone He shows several encounters of unshakeable willpower through two of his most persistent characters. For an example, Antigone rebelling against a law and Haemon challenging his own father. The two characters only have self-beliefs to go off of for their rebellion, against the king. Their uprising could bring severe or even fatal disaster. Sophocles presents an abundant amount of evidence for determination through Antigone and Haemon. He indicates through the actions of the unyielding Antigone and her
Acknowledged as the protagonist of the epic, Frodo was gifted with a temper well fitting to fight evil, and Sauron. Frodo was brave, selfless, wise, observant, polite and selfless and those were the traits that helped him fight against Sauron. "A Ring of Power looks after itself, Frodo. It may slip off treacherously, but its keeper never abandons it" as said by Gandalf meant that even though Sauron didn't have the ring and didn't know its location he still had a complete control of it "It was not Gollum...but the Ring itself that decided things. The Ring left him". And in other words it meant that Sauron's influence was not defeated by the absence of the Ring, only abridged and spread out. The Ring will always be found, and it will at all time come back to its creator so that its sinful nature can be complete. The way Frodo fought against Sauron's will to get the One Ring was that Frodo refused to wear the Ring and use its powers even though they were meant for good and Gandalf's words encouraged him "Do not tempt me! For I do not wish to become like the Dark Lord himself. Yet the way of the Ring to my heart is by pity, pity for weakness and the desire to strengthen to do good".
Determination is “The act or an instance of making an important decision and not giving up” (“Determination”). In The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay Gatsby is a succesful business man who will go to extremes to win the heart of the woman of his dreams, Daisy, hoping she would leave her husband for him. Gatsby threw extravagant parties with an abundance of alcohol and a variety of people. People would drive hundreds of miles to attend one of Jay Gatsby’s parties. He would never participate in any of his parties, however, so no one knew him. One may ask: Why would he spend so much money on parties he did not even participate in? The answer is that he would stand on the balcony looking over his unknown party guests hoping Daisy would show up one evening. Gatsby was very determined to get the attention of Daisy, and he believed by throwing these parties he would do so. He was so anxious to see her; he had his neighbor Nick invite her over one afternoon. He had been very nervous and wanted eve...
Kevin displays great determination in this novel. Near the beginning of this narrative, Kevin is playing with a mechanical bird and flies it up into a tree. He repeatedly tries to free it from the tree, even though he seems to be getting nowhere. He had his mind set on it, so he wouldn't stop until it was in his hands. This section of the story shows that if Kevin sets a goal for himself, he’ll do almost anything to achieve it. Another example is that when Kevin helps the cops look for Max when he’s reported missing Kevin never gives up looking for Max, even when the cops want to give up. This example is yet another form of great determination. All of these points help indicate that Kevin displays great determination through the novel by Rodman Philbrick.

Stubbornness, it can used to keep persevering despite hardships, but a character in “The Things They Carried” shows that it can also be a trait that can negatively impact a person; that character was Norman. Norman stubbornness kept him from talking about his experience about the war because he believed no one would understand and in the end it became his undoing (O’Brien, 131-148). A part of one’s essence and in my case stubbornness can be reflected in multiple items be it small and plain items like my necklace or something larger and more expensive like my
the moth, man also has both stubbornness and determination. Determination is a quality that makes a person continue to try, to do, or to achieve something that is difficult. It is a person’s overall drive to never give up and continue striving towards a desired goal. If I was asked to describe myself in one word, I would choose determined. Throughout my life I have had many experiences where my determination has helped me fight through tough times. By having this quality it has helped me to win a girls bowling IHSA state title, be an all-state athlete, and also continue my goals for my education. Determination is important to me because I need it to achieve my goals and reach my highest potential. Determination starts with the decision to go for the goal and to make the commitment to attain the goal. Determination is also the continuous driving force to overcome the obstacles on the way to the destination. It focuses the mind on the end result. It strengthens the will to carry on, to arrive at the destination.
Determination is shown in many different characters, but mainly in Peekay. For example, Peekay was determined to become an extravagant boxer just like Hoppie. He had to overcome many childhood fears that he had. He was determined to be a great boxer just like Hoppie. Determination brought Peekay to becoming the champion boxer of South Africa.

My strong determination and tenacious will power are demonstrated on a daily basis. It is displayed in every aspect of my life. Strong determination is displayed in my school, in just the sole basis of me coming back to school and wanting to do better in my life. It’s also displayed in home life, in ways like creating the best possible environment for me along with my family.
