As I read the chapter I was thinking of a destructive behavior that I wanted to choose to work on to gradually eliminate it. However, I kept thinking to myself that sometimes one is not ready to change the behavior just yet. Therefore, if one does not have the motivation to change it becomes pointless to attempt in eliminating the destructive behavior. I mention this because I believe that change comes from within, so one ultimately has the control to facilitate that change. When picking a health habit that I would like to challenge myself, there were many that I want to choose but I want to choose something that I know that I can fully commit to it and know that I can do it. I want to start something small and then in the future if I want to challenge myself then I will gradually go for a health habit that is more challenging. The health habit that I decide to go with was eliminating my intake on soft drinks or drinks that have high sugar including drinks that contain high-fructose corn syrup. In addition, I want to drink more water because I notice that I do not drink enough water, therefore, I want to incorporate that into my life. I chose this health habit because I notice that my intake of sugar is high and I want to stop myself from doing it but I cannot be commit to it.
For this self-awareness paper, we were required to give up an addictive behaviour or habit for three weeks. I hope to think that I do not have many addictive habits or behaviours, and therefore it was difficult for me to decide what to give up. An addictive behaviour can be hard to define, however they often increase as time goes on, lead to an inability to stop even if one is motivated to do so, lead to a discontinuation of other activities in favor of the behaviour, and often times are difficult to stop even though they cause harm. When I first saw this assignment on the syllabus I wondered what I should do. After several discussions with friends I discovered I had several choices. I could give up caffeine (but none of my friends would be around me), I could give up Facebook, but I don’t think that would bother me in the long run, I could also give up Netflix, but that wouldn’t really bother me either. During the abstinence exercises for my Addiction Recovery and Social Work Practice course, I learned how to mentally abstain from my desires.
