Chicago is a beautiful and notorious city that is home of many landmarks. Being a large city Chicago is home to a lot of architecture and landmarks such as the Sears Tower, the water tower, the fountain and many more; they do not represent chicago as much as the bean. Although Chicago has many iconic landmarks, the Cloud gate also known as the bean is the most known iconic landmark for Chicago.
The bean is a well-known place in chicago. Many people enjoy visiting chicago and going specifically to the bean because of it’s interesting structure and how easy it is to take pictures. Chicagoans and tourists enjoy going to the bean and taking memorable pictures. Personally I am a Chicagoan. My family and I have gone to chicago and visited the bean.
From first impression, Burnham found that Chicago had a murky factorial image lined with a “fantastic stink that lingered in the vicinity of Union Stock yards” (41). The dreadful surface that Chicago was maintaining allowed Burnham to be determined to collaborate and recreate its image. One major feature that transformed public opinion of the state was to illuminate the entire fair with clean white buildings that outlined the goodness of the area (252). Eye-catching whiteness contradicted the presumed dirtiness of the town. Making a contradiction from what was assumed of the city would allow the fair to generate a much bigger transformation. The lights also gave the fair a unique, whimsical edge. “The lamps that laced every building and walkway produced the most elaborate demonstration of electric illumination ever attempted”, incorporating new technology in a grand-scale way merely to keep the theme of brightness ongoing throughout each day and night (254). Chicago, one of the most popular cities in America. Visits from families all around the country, what makes this place so great? Is it the skyscrapers that protrude the sky? Or is it the weather people loved? Does Chicago being the second most favored city in America show that this town has some greatness?
The Brooklyn Bridge was a symbol of power, America did something no one else has done. America also built massive skyscrapers, like the Tribune Building to symbolize their progress. Americans felt a sense of pride and patriotism that was much needed after the Civil War. Another movement happening in big cities was the City Beautiful Movement. After the Industrial Revolution cities were nasty places. Mayors and other donors decided to make these cities more inviting. Cities like New York and Chicago are majorly inspired by this movement. When Chicago burned down in 1871, they rebuilt the city to be beautiful and white for purity. Cities felt the need to reinvent because people now had more leisure time and should be attracted to the events in the cities. The “White City” was a vast collection of architecture and arts that were put on display in the year 1893. The Chicago World Fair, also called the “White City”, was a major event in American history that impacted America’s culture, economic, and industry. The Chicago World Fair was held to honor Columbus’ discovery of the New World. The real reason why it was made was to proudly have back their wealth and power. Larson said, “the tower not only assured the eternal fame of its designer, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel but also offered graphic proof that France had edged out the United States for dominance in the realm of iron and steel…”(15). The setting of the story is Chicago’s South Side. This area of Chicago was known as the “capital of black America” (Manning), and according to Andrew Wiese, Chicago used to be known as “the most segregated city in America” (118). These seriously contradictory statements are true. Chicago’s South Side was home to William L. Dawson, who was the most powerful black politician at the time, and Joe Luis, who was a boxing champion and was known as the most popular black man in America (Manning). It was the most popular place for blacks to migrate to during the Great Migration, and the population grew from 278,000 blacks to 813,000 blacks. Most of the neighborhoods located in the South Side were poor and highly segregated from the rich white neighborhoods located just outside the South Side (Pacyga). The housing in these areas was very poor as well. Most of the African Americans at the time lived in a small apartment called a kitchenette. These were cramped with a small kitchen and small rooms (Plotkin). Lorraine Hansberry describes the Youngers house as a worn out, cramped, and very small apartment (23). She also talks about the small kitchen, living room, and bedrooms (24). These apartments were not ideal, but it was all that many African Americans could afford. If African Americans tried to move nicer neighborhoods, whites would perform violent acts on them (Choldin). This violence was recorded in a African American newspaper, known the Chicago Defender (Best).
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I lived in a very welcoming neighborhood. As a child, I had many friends on my street. We would ride bikes, climb trees, visit the playground at the local park district, and stay outside until the streetlights turned on. The families on my street always looked out for each other, so we didn't worry too much about safety. All of my friends attended the same school and participated in the Chicago Park District's activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, music and dance lessons, and open gym events. The park district hosted an annual gym show so the kids could perform for their families. Residents would get together on most Sundays to talk about issues in the neighborhood and share meals and stories.
Washington D.C: Our Nation’s Capital Although the entire world is familiar with the City of Washington as the United State’s capital, the city was nonexistent when we became a nation in 1789. Thanks to the brilliant design of the French born engineer, Pierre Charles L’Enfant and his assistants Benjamin Banneker and Andrew Ellicot, our capital city that was once a swamp now is beautiful with many different parks, gardens trees, tall buildings and wide avenues. Washington, District of Columbia named after Christopher Columbus, has played a unique role in the wars of our nation and has been dramatically affected by their awesome events.
The Chicago Cubs are an interesting part of Illinois history, even if they are not always successful. The history of Wrigley Field, the famous players, and the stories behind every game are why Chicago loves the Cubs. It is the atmosphere of the friendly confines when you walk in through those gates. It is jumping out of your seat when the ball is being hit out of the park. It is things as little as singing the 7th inning stretch with all the other Cub fans around you. Rooting for the underdog is special, and that is why Cub fans are so loyal. The history, players, and stories of Chicago Cubs Baseball are the reasons why it is an important part of Illinois history.

Chicago has played a major role in American Literary history. As African American writers struggled to express their unique literary voice, they sought to celebrate diversity of the American people and to develop a unifying national identity for themselves (Woolley).
The Broadway Fountain located in Madison, Indiana is a famous artistic structure that is well known for its historical background and current use as an ideal location of weddings and other gatherings. In the course of a little over a century, the fountain has been in danger of being completely discarded twice and has been replaced with an exact bronze replica. Designed by French sculptor J. P. Victor Andre, the original Broadway Fountain was presented to the city of Madison in 1886 after being featured in the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition (National Park Service).
One half of the story was of a man named Daniel Burnham, who was a famous architect of his time. It’s in this half of the story that can you see the good part of the city. Pride can be seen mainly throughout his story. His life in these pages was based on the construction of the World Columbian Exposition which was a fair held in Chicago in 1893. This magnificent fair was in honor of one of America’s most well known discoverers, Christopher C. Columbus. This was the 400th anniversary of his discovery of the new world. Sidewalks an overlooked luxury, a path for everyone to take that makes their lives a bit easier. Sometimes I feel like a sidewalk, hilariously enough, but not because I am made of concrete, because it is a hand to hold through life or support through a hard time and that is what I have seen, my path. And now it is what I hope to help others find, I wish to be a path for the weary. We all know a person that is our sidewalk, our support from this jungle of a world. My support has always been my family, they are a very important aspect in my life. My family helped shape me into the “sidewalk” I try to be. That is why I would like to be support for another because I know the lost feeling and how fantastic it feels to take that weight off your shoulders with the help of a friend.
When the reader ventures into the life of a Bean, the enter a whole other realm of life and values, away from the common culture that forces certain ideas and ways of life onto you everyday. Carolyn Chute's use of stereotypical characters and defining roles in society was the main element to the creation and execution of her story.
