There are three main archangels mentioned in the bible, their names are Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. The term archangel means ruling or chief angels. They are the angels God trusts the most to fulfill his duties. Michael is the warrior, Gabriel is the messenger and Raphael is the healer. Each of them play key roles in many stories of the Bible Michael the archangel is sometimes referred to as ‘one of the chief princes’ or ‘ the leader of other angels.’ He is the enforcer of law and judgement, and one of two angels in the Bible who are actually referred to as archangels. In the book of Tobit, Raphael disguises himself as a human named Azarius and goes on a journey with his son Tobia. When he and Tobia come back from their journey, he tells him that he is actually the archangel Raphael, sent from the Lord to cure his blindness. Along with Saint Raphael being the patron saint of healing, his name literally translates to, “God is healer.” He is considered to be the “Medicine of God.” His feast day, just like all the other archangels, is celebrated on the 29th of September. Raphael is believed to be found in John chapter 5, where there is a lot of sick people around a river. An angel comes to the river to help heal the sick. It is believed to be Raphael because he’s the patron saint of healing, but it is not proven because the angel is not given a name in the scripture. Raphael Sanizo, usually known just by his first name, was born in 1483 in Urbino, Italy. He was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. He was celebreated for the perfection and grace of his paintings and drawings. He was very productive in his life, but had an early death at the age of thirty-seven years old, letting his rival Michelangelo take the reins on the art world. He is one of the great masters of his time. He died on March 28 of 1483 at the age of thirty-seven years old.
The Renaissance in Western Europe brought a “rebirth” to the arts. No longer was the church the only accredited patron for the arts. Instead, a wealthy middle class arose as patrons and were able to purchase artist’s works. Although many pieces still had religious themes, the styles, freedom of creativity, and less reserved pieces were created. The Renaissance was not only confined to Italy, although it is often mistaken as the birthplace of the movement. All over Western Europe artwork flourished. Artists from the north came to Italy to study the classical arts and the renowned Italian Renaissance artists. Many of the same themes and subject matters were depicted throughout Western Europe. One such subject matter, the Annunciation, was portrayed by Jan van Eyck, a Flemish panel painter, as well as, Fra Angelico, an Italian fresco painter. In short, the Annunciation occurred when God sends the angel, Gabriel to deliver the message to Mary that she will give birth to his only son. Although both artists had the same understanding of the biblical account, their styles varied to agree with the concerns and interests of the people of the time as well as where they lived. They were able to establish their individuality through their artwork, even with the same subject matter. The Annunciation by Jan van Eyck is a perfect reflection of Northern Renaissance panel painting while Annunciation by Fra Angelico is the essence of Italian Renaissance fresco painting.
It was examined by infrared reflectogram and x-rayed for the first time and, on the basis of stylistic hallmarks such as “emphatic cross-hatching,” such as on the face of the saint, it was confirmed to be a Michelangelo (Michelangelo, n.d.). The painting depicts a pale St. Anthony, who was a mystic and possessed the gift of levitation, floating in mid-air being accosted and attacked by several demons, one holding a fiery torch. A correction to the upper curve of one of the bat-like demon’s arms, where Michelangelo applied a slight paint stroke, can be seen.

The Book of Daniel is the only full-blown apocalyptic book in the Protestant recognized version of the Canon. A literary device divides the book into two halves. Chapters 1-6 are a collection of stories that introduces the reader to Daniel and three other Israelites as unwilling guests of the Babylonia Empire ruled by Nebuchadnezzar. The second half, Chapters 7-12 consists of apocalyptic imagery of deformed beasts and the heavenly court. The focus of this paper will be on chapter 7, which serves as a bridge of the two halves. Chapter 7 is the earliest of the visions as it identifies with the genre of 8-12 while through language and content it reverts to Daniel chapter 2. The linguistic break down is not as neat as the literary divide in that Dan. 2:4b-7:28 was written in Aramaic while other portions of the book is written in Hebrew.

However , the bible only mentions three angels by name and actually contains very little information about these beings. Almost all of the information we have about angelic attributes comes from the three great Chronicles of Enoch. In these chronicles Enoch describes his journey to the ten Heavens where he saw angels in heaven's penal and punishment area, punishing sinners. His view was that hell existed in small pockets that were distributed throughout heaven. This view was not consistent with the later Church that believed heaven and hell were two separate places. Because of this, St. Jerome declared these texts apocryphal (Godwin 9). However, a lot of material from these chronicles appears in the New Testament. The archangel is depicted with one wing upraised and his feet apart as if he were running. The posture of his body gives a sense of motion and captures the urgency and and great joy of his message. With his right arm he imparts a blessing while with his left he holds a staff that is the symbol of his authority as a messenger of God.

After reading Book 2 of Paradise Lost, which was about the meeting of all the fallen angels gathered together in their temple, Pandemonium, to plan the next war to take over Heaven once again, I was interested with the different views and ideas that the fallen angels had, such as Moloch, who was the fiercest fighter of the fallen angels, Belial who is cautious about the idea of another war to take Heaven again, and Mammon, who refuses to follow under God’s orders again.
