The reason for the ‘decline and fall’ of Rome, as historian Edward Gibbon called it, has long been debated by many historians and scholars, producing many different theories. One of these is the invasions of barbarian tribes, mainly the Goths, Germanic tribes, and the Huns. Both the Huns and the Germanic tribes attacked from without, but the Goths, after being treated with extreme brutality by Rome, revolted from within, weakening the nation and making it easier for the Goth King Alaric to come in and sack Rome later. Another suggestion for Rome’s depreciation is that by killing off all other rivals, the emperors brought Rome’s destruction upon themselves by destroying the group where future leaders could have come from.
