Delaware, one of the thirteen British Colonies, became a sovereign state in 1776 and gained its independence from Great Britain on June 15th, 1776. On February 22, 1779 Delaware signed the Articles of Confederation, then later became the first state to ratify the Constitution, sometime around December 1787. For its ratification, Delaware is known as the “First State.” This state got its “Delaware” name from the Delaware River as you can see the resemblance. The motto that Delaware goes by is “Liberty and Independence,” and became their motto when it was added to Delaware's state seal. Some other nicknames that have been given to Delaware over time would be “Diamond State” and “Blue Hen State”.

Later he went to the University of Pennsylvania and earned himself a medical degree where he opened a successful practice in Milford. He later got himself into politics and tried to run for governor's office in 1830. He was unsuccessful, so he later tried again in November 1858 where he won. William Burton became Delaware's 31st governor and later retired from office in 1863.Governor William Burton died on August 5th, 1866, and was buried at Christ Episcopal Churchyard in Milford, Delaware.
Another important person would be Major General George Sykes. He was born on October 9th, 1822 in Dover, Delaware. He graduated from West Point with the Class of 1842 and from there he went to Florida to join in on the second Seminole war. Governor William Burton served in many states during the Civil War, like New Mexico and Texas. He was considered one of the best officers in the Army.
