Reputation is the entity in which people's belief or opinion is characterized to someone. Reputation is based on your decisions and others view on you. It can be ruined very easily so it is important in today's society to maintain it as much as possible especially in situations where reputation is a big factor such as getting a job, getting a loan, and buying a car; these are just a few situations in life where reputation is needed. It can be very difficult.
Reputation can be easily hurt and destroyed easily by your decisions or actions. For example, when buying a car or getting a loan you need to make sure you have good credit. Credit is similar to reputation and it shows how good or bad you are with payments and other finances. If you receive bad credit you will most likely be declined for a loan or have to bear with an extremely high interest rate. “If your reputation is damaged, the economic consequences can be

For example, if you work for a business or have duty in a business it is important for you to represent this business in the best way possible and to have it at the highest grade of service. If you do not maintain this or hurt the businesses reputation because of your mistakes than your business will lose customers that may have severe consequences. For example, in the book the crucible, Proctors reputation is hurt in seconds when he tells the court that he had an affair with Abigail and at this time he was also married. “Proctor: I have known her, sir. I have known her…. for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted,” (miller, The crucible) This severely hurt Mr. Proctors reputation. In a matter of seconds, proctor lost his entire reputation to save his wife from being hanged. People will always have something to say regarding what kind of a person you are whether it is good or bad. In the drama, “The Crucible” reputation was one of the biggest concerns for the people of Salem. Everyone was pointing fingers at each other, making accusations of being witches, or so-called “running with the devil.” If you use quotation marks, be sure to cite the source. If the marks are for effect, then italics should be used in instead. Reputation influences the actions and motivations of three major characters: Elizabeth, Proctor, and Parris. Use your thesis statement last, stronger effect and better organization. All three characters encounter some sense of being ambushed and their name goes down the drain. A person’s reputation makes or breaks them and always follows them till the day that they die. Their name and legacy lives on forever.
Reputation is a company’s biggest asset so you would think that organisations would avoid engaging in any sort of business that would put its reputation in jeopardy. Nevertheless, many organisations find their credibility destroyed due to practices that are harmful and illegal, which could land a CEO’s in prison.
What are individuals willing to really do to maintain their reputation? Maurice Friedman ponders this question. In Problematic Rebel, Friedman states, “The hopeful element in the Greek view is that [,] to remain in harmony with this order [,] he must pay the price of the loss of something of his humanity, something of his full possibility of personal existence” (23). It is believed that in order to have an elevated position, something of importance must be sacrificed. Beowulf, Gawain, and Arthur share similar characteristics by being noble and heroic warriors. Credibility is the amount of trust people have in you. For example, a student would have an English teacher read over his paper because he trusts that teacher to catch his mistakes and be able to help him correct them. The famous poet James Russell Lowell once said, “Reputation is only a candle, of wavering and uncertain flame, and easily blown out, but it is the light by which the world looks for and finds merit” . Reality stresses the importance to be more concerned with personal character than self reputation, because character beholds who you really are, while your reputation is merely what others perceive. The epic of Beowulf, written in Old English, describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. Having an outstanding reputation was an important aspect of life, and in the world of Beowulf it was no different.
In the crucible, I believe reputation and respect was interwoven in the term of the play the ‘‘crucible’’. Reputation and Respect can also be a theme or a thematic idea in the play, reputation is very essential in a town where social status is synonymously to ones competence to follow religious rules. Your standing is what enables you to live as one in a community where everyone is bound to rules and inevitable sequential instructions. Many characters for example, john proctor and reverend parris, base their action on the motive to protect their reputation which is only exclusive to them. People like reverend parris saw respect as what made them important or valuable in a town like Salem, this additionally imprinting to his character as a very conventional man.
Having a reputation is unavoidable. People will always make subconscious judgments of you which will affect their opinion even if there is no base behind it. However, letting it conform your personal identity and conscience is something that any individual can do. Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a perfect example of this idea. Boo was assigned his father’s reputation by society; cruel and cold. However, even in the solidarity of his home, he chose to define himself as he pleased and refused to let the reputation handcuff him into being someone that he’s not. A similar situation has happened to myself, with the reputation of being a nerd likewise being chained to me. However, I could consciously refuse to allow that to define who I believe I am. This leads me to believe that even though any individual may have a distinct reputation forced upon them, they always have the
In Shakespeare's Othello, reputation is one of the main themes that is expressed. Every characters reputation played a vital role in how and why certain events were played out. For instance, Iago analyzed each individual's reputation, found their weaknesses, and used them to his advantage. Characters like Iago, Cassio, Desdemona, and Othello were all concerned with their reputations throughout the tragedy. If the concern of each characters reputation was not part of Othello, then the story and events that took place would have played out differently.
Reputation has taken on a whole new meaning because of the Internet. Nowadays, it's effortless to know a person and form impressions of them based on how you see them online, through social media sites. It's so easy to tell how a person might be like based on status updates, shared photos, and their online interaction with other social media users. If you can know so much about a person through social media, what more if it's a business establishment?
Reputation is the beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something. A famous American poet once said: “Oh reputation dearer far than life”. James Russell Lowell highlights the importance of reputation by declaring it more important than even human life itself. This idea is also found in ‘The Crucible’ as many characters will be challenged between telling the truth and dying, or saving their reputation. In ‘The Crucible’, this theme beholds a key position in the unrolling of the story as an impression of control over the outcome of people’s lives is created by its importance.
To many, reputation is everything. In the epic poem Beowulf, the epic hero is notably known throughout the world. He is known for one, for being one of the Greats. On top of all of that, Beowulf is the greatest and strongest of all of the Greats, therefore, he automatically has a reputation to follow. Therefore, when fighting against all three monsters, Grendel, Grendel’s Mother, and the dragon at the end of his well-known life, he strives to keep that reputation. By fighting each one of these battles his reputation grows, he becomes better known for the kindness and strength he has to battle these monstrous creatures. Another contributor to his good reputation is the fact that he did this for people he didn’t even know. This proves him to be a good man, and people think highly of him because of it. Also, when going to speak to the Dane’s great lord, Beowulf explains his reputation with his people on page 47, lines 246-248, “They have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war, dripping with my enemies’ blood.” This shows that Beowulf has a reputation with his people, that they know what he is capable of and have seen him in battles. His people know he is capable of fighting the beast simply because of his past experiences he has built up a reputation, a reputation of strength, honor and capability. As he fights each monsters his
An example would be a politician who managed to get a major bridge built in their district let the bridge be named after themselves. It would be also a congressmen’s desire to be seen as the cause of benefitting constituents mutually helpful. For candidates who are trying to win an election, the “image” or impression they give has been very important in politics. And through credit claiming, the image of the candidate would definitely give an impact to the people to vote for them. First impressions are extremely important as it is the factor of success or rejection. It shows the personality and how it can come across to voters. Politicians are aware of how the public views them and take years to build trust, make connections, and establish a vision for a community. However, one negative comment or distrustful action can destroy the foundation. There has to be an image of confidence, in order for citizens to trust politicians. As body language plays a significant role in public communications, it delivers a level of comfort leading the public and the standings of their ideas. Politicians must also keep calm in high- pressure situations, such as debates. Strong images must be kept whenever the public’s attention is on them, as every word and movement matters. The epic poem “Beowulf” embodies the main heroic plot points of the usual hero coming to action, getting the reward and then dying in the most heroic way possible. However the themes of “Beowulf” as a whole encompass basically what would be reputation. During the Anglo-Saxon period reputation got people wherever and if a person was lucky enough to be born into a good name then they would be set for life. However most people had to create something of themselves and constantly prove their worth day in and day out. Reputation as a theme in Beowulf surfaces frequently throughout the pages. Joan Jett’s song Bad Reputation started controversy relating to the behavior of women, an issue that has been around long before the twentieth century. During the Medieval Ages, a person’s reputation, gender, and social status all determined their place in society. One’s position then determined their possibility of acquittal by jury. The question is, why? Why was the value of one’s reputation placed so high by society and what were the effects it had on different types of people?
