What do you think of when you hear the word home? Picture it: a cute little brick house with a beautiful green lawn, colorful garden flowers, and a white picket fence surrounding it. If you see that picture, you obviously have the wrong idea of home. When you say home, do you really mean to say house? Now you’re thinking about what the difference is between a home and a house. A lot of people don’t think about these two words major differences. Even the Merriam-Webster Dictionary hasn’t put a lot of thought into the differences between these two similar sounding words. I never even thought about how home sick I would get. Before I experienced being home sick myself, when I heard my roommates say this phrase I would always think that they miss their houses and they missed being in their house with their family. Now that I can feel home sickness for myself I know it’s much more than that. That is why the phrase is “home sick” and not “house sick” I guess. It’s because when someone is home sick they don’t just miss their house, they miss their family and friends. They miss the place where their family is and where they were taken care of all their life. On the other side of things, I sometimes catch myself saying “I’m going home” so some of my friends when I start to head back to my dorm room. I realized that my dorm room is like a home to me because it is where my best friends are. My dorm is also where my friends and I take care of each other and have great times together. I am home sick from my family and friends back at home but my roommates and I also made a second home for ourselves in our dorm room. I know when I am home for break I am going to feel some home sickness from being away from my dorm and my roommates too. That might sound very weird to some people but I sure I will miss the second home that we all created together.
