Scientifically, any moment further than this exact moment in time can be referenced to as ‘future’. Future can be described as time that is advanced or not yet experienced. Yes, the future exists, but what it encompasses is fluid; ever changing based on current decisions and events. According to the Oxford dictionary, future originates from Old French, futurus, meaning “become; that is yet to be”. It’s not tangible, yet so many broken souls put their hope in it, with reassuring phrases like “the future will be better”, or “the best is yet to come”. He will view the future as bright and invigorating. He’s looking forward to his future because his future is college, and college means fun people, new hobbies, and furthering his knowledge. To him, the future is a new start. Now, picture the mother of three that just finalized the divorce papers with her soon-to-be ex husband, who is going through a financial hardship due to her recent unemployment. Her future is like a big intimidating storm looming over her; just the thought of it makes her feel uneasy and threatened. The unknown future could hold even harder times and doesn’t seem very promising. To her, the future is a lonely roadblock. Lastly, imagine the stage 4 cancer patient, surrounded by his loved ones, grandkids, his own children, and friends; all gathered together celebrating his colorful life. He’s been bedridden for weeks and the IV prick has started to feel second nature. Yet through it all, the old man still has a gentle smile on his face, wrinkled from years of laughter. His future? Short, to say the least. Limited to months, possibly weeks. How can he be so full of joy knowing that it’s all coming to an end so soon? By reflecting on his past, so content and full of life, his future doesn’t need to be any longer.
