How often are military members defending our country? They are always defending the public whether it’s saving someone, defending someone, or making sure nothing bad happens.
Military members have always been defending without conflict. In an excerpt from Of
Plymouth Plantation Miles Standish was there to protect and defend the colonists. Miles was hired to be a military advisor in the colony. Even though there was no conflict until the Indians attacked the pilgrims, Miles defended everyone each day they were there. This set an example onto all military active duty and vets to serve and protect the people by always defending.

In the story Outcast of Poker Flats, They’re defending their home just like the military defends our country. The people who were left to fend for themselves with limited rations protected what was true to them. The mother saved the children longer by not eating to make sure her kids lived. In Jamestown, the settlers had to deal with the Powhatan Indians. The relationships with them were unstable. John Smith, whom was the leader of Jamestown, was captured by these Indians while he was on a little trip with some of his men. As he left two of his men, he came back to find them dead and himself surrounded by two hundred members of the tribe, finding himself being captured. “Six or seven weeks those barbarians kept him prisoner…” 87). After this event, the relationship only grew worse and there was constant fighting between the settlers and Indians. The Indians practiced many methods in capturing settlers such as “scalping” and other dreadful techniques. The settlers did many negative practices also which is the reason they fought so many wars and battles against each other. Later on, the Indians killed the English for their weapons that were rare to them. In contrast to the Plymouth colony, these settlers dealt with the Pequot Indians and the relations were much more peaceful for a certain time frame. Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.

The controversy brought on by the Second Amendment is because the Second Amendment does not clearly define whom "the people" are.
