Chronicle Of a Death Foretold Females are raised to suffer. All people should have an identity and should not be invisible. Identity is the sense of self, providing sameness and continuity in personality. Chronicle of a Death Foretold takes place in Columbia, South America in 1951. Women in this culture are never given a chance to live the life they deserve. Once a women marries she becomes, a slave to her husband. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the author illustrates machismo as a cultural expectation which causes women to be seen less than men in order to illustrate how Vicario women lost their identity due to marriage. "The tragedy of Machismo is that a man is never quite man enough." This means being a man is difficult and he must always be tough because there will always be somebody better. Men strive everyday to become more powerful because this is the cultural expectation in Columbia. Men cause women to be seen as less or nothing. Women should never be told to give up all of their passions because a man believes she deserves to have none. This is degrading to women and breaks them down. Columbia's culture teaches women to be ready to suffer. Angela's mother, Purísima del Carmen, is married to Poncio Vicario, Angela's father. Purísima's dreams and achievements are bright and glorious until she marries Poncio. She is working as a schoolteacher. She works hard as a schoolteacher, but when she marries Poncio she is expected dedicates her life to her family. She is prepared to leave her job and become a slave to her husband because her culture raised her to suffer. Purísima is said to have "devoted herself with such spirit of sacrifice to the care of her husband and the rearing of her children that at times one forgot she still existed" (Marquez 31). This means that since she knows she must give up her identity as a teacher, she might as well do it happily. In this male dominated society, the men are supposed to be able to tell the women to do whatever they please. She sacrifices her life so that her children and husband are always satisfied. Purísima Vicario loses her identity to marriage. It says that at times one forgot she still existed. She no longer is doing anything for herself.
