How would you react to hearing the words “You only have a certain amount of months left to live?” Johnny was a young teen when he was diagnosed with having a brain tumor. The brain tumor never stopped Johnny from achieving what he wanted and his will to live. John Gunther(Johnny’s dad) portrays a variety of themes in his memoir “Death Be Not Proud.” Johnny wasn’t an average person. He had a determined spirit. In “Death Be not Proud”, Johnny was hit with an eye opening adversary. Rather than let death defeat him, Johnny had a will to live and clung too that will no matter what life threw at him. Johnny often said “But I have so much to do with such little time!” The indication of this was Johnny never mourned over why he was the one who had to go through this, but accepted death as a battle that could be defeated. Even after ongoing through multiple surgeries, tests, and in and out of hospitals, he still made the best of his life that God gave him. Johnny often even made jokes about his illness. “I bet that ole’ mustard has knocked the tumor out!”(Gunther 85) No matter what curve ball was thrown at Johnny, he loved his life to much too just to let it go easily. Even when his mom or dad seemed to doubt that he would ever get better, Johnny never once gave up. If you have a refusal to surrender, you will never lose. Johnny never lost. When his doctor told him about the tumor, Johnny replied with “I don’t get just any tumor, I get a special tumor.”(Gunther 78) Johnny refused to concede defeat. John often referred to Johnny as the “sunniest of all creatures”.(Gunther 8) He was always happy and joking around even on the days when he didn’t feel pleasing.
