Many people in the hearing world have no idea that there is such thing as a Deaf world, due to this issue Deaf people are often labeled and seen as less. Some are even forced to take oral classes in order to improve their speech even though they can’t hear a word. The articles, The Real Meaning of Hearing Impaired, The Attitude of the Adult Deaf Towards Pure Oralism, and The Deaf Adult’s Point of View explain Deaf people’s perspective on oralism and what its like for Deaf people to go through this process. These articles also give hearing people an example of what its like to be labeled and not considered good or smart enough. There is a lot of opinions regarding oralism in the Deaf community some want it some don’t. In the article, The Attitude of the Adult Deaf towards Pure Oralism, author Amos G. Draper tells the story of a Deaf couple that was assaulted at night and their screams were mistaken for dogs barking, in the paper headlines the next day they were the “Deaf and dumb”,”Deaf mutes” (179). Draper bring up the question how come their screams were mistaken for dogs after all those years of taking oral classes? I believe that society wants people that are willing to change their differences in order to be “normal”, however that is not realistic. Schreiber explains that hearing parents that have Deaf children are not given enough choices for their child. For example. “parents are advised to toss him into the sea of knowledge and let him sink or swim”(189), meaning that most parents are advice to put their child through surgical procedures and oral classes in order for their standard of living to be normal. The author says thats hearing parents who have Deaf children should learn about the Deaf culture before making a harsh decision about the baby’s life. Something that was mentioned in the article that i already knew was that most doctors would tell the hearing parents to have all there surgeries and oral classes for their child to have a normal life. In conclusion after reading all the articles i believe that a parent that has a Deaf child should consider other options rather than just oralism or a cochlear implant for their
