Mini Q: World War 1 As countless scores of men climb over the battlement of their trenches, running towards impending death in the open field. This scene transpired a numberless amount of times in World War I. What was the underlying cause of World War 1. The war was caused by imperialism, militarism, alliances. Alliances caused more nations to fight in the war. Militarism motivated other nations to fight with each other. Imperialism sowed dissent and caused competition between nations. Militarism set other nations on edge as they moved their troops. These three things are what caused World War 1. Imperialism was the main cause of the war. Imperialism is the overtaking of other areas. This slowly changed them into a mix of the new and old culture. In document F it shows the area places controlled outside of their nation. Militarism is when a nation focuses on their military. Document C shows the amount of money each country spent on the army and the navy. This provoked the other nations to spend more money on their army and navy. In document D it shows how Germany wants to attack the other nation. Germany spent the most money in the beginning of the war, This caused Britain to respond in kind. This is why militarism was a major cause of WW1. War was caused by nations attacking the other alliance, causing them to respond in kind. Alliances are made out of fear, necessity, or for support. After the defense alliances were made and then nations attacked them, they retaliated with everyone in the alliance. This pulled all the other nations into the war.
