The Dark Ages was a time period in which barbarians raided, diseases spread rapidly, and kingdoms started to emerge. For nearly one thousand years Europe endured the Middle Ages, caused by the fall of the roman empire in 473. The Medieval time period had its ups and downs, however, it was mainly highlighted by the horrible things the people that were born during that time had to endure. Europe needed a break from the dread and needed some time of peace and innovation. Luckily the Renaissance was on its way, and it was Florence, Italy that was the ground zero for the “Rebirth” or “Revival” of European life. The Renaissance changed the way people saw their world by opening everyone’s eyes and showing them the good things. Such is self-evident …show more content…
As seen in Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the background of nature was more detailed, and Mona Lisa herself is smiling, meanwhile Madonna Enthroned Between two Angles by Duccio, was more focused on Mary and Jesus (Document A). These two paintings show the great amount of difference between these two time periods, because of the painting from the Renaissance, the Mona Lisa, was more lively and focused more on beauty. This goes to show the appreciation of life itself, as it didn’t depict a horrible disease or anything but the beauty of the lady that is depicted and the surroundings. With the Medieval painting, The Madonna, the viewer has a more fixed focus on Jesus and the frowning Mary. This painting shows the importance of Christianity and the people wanting to be with Jesus, rather than this life. For literature the same is true. Hamlet, by Shakespeare, shows that people were quite satisfied with their quality of life. “What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals!” (Document B). This passage goes to show the Renaissance showed people how amazing life is. It showed that beauty of nature, and how during this time period it was you were living like
...ng the Renaissance were much like the modern day celebrities and personalities that entertain society through and through. The world had become so infatuated with taking in more knowledge into discovery and exploration of life and nature that by producing its images and projections onto a canvas or perhaps carved into stone was the most entertaining process to take part in. There is a true Renaissance man within all human beings and by taking a deeper and closer look into the greatest works of art, gaining a greater appreciation of the Renaissance heritage in an uplifting and edification of experience. The art within the Renaissance rediscovered man for what and who we are as individuals and giving up the idea that each person is just another part of the species fulfilling a number within the population and showing the true beauty and aesthetics of life and nature.
The time period between 400 CE and 1400 CE was not a Dark Age for Europe because there was still laws and education that kept areas in Europe alive and moving forward. The Dark Age was a historical period in time when culture and economy levels decreased. This occurred after the fall of the Roman Empire. One factor that prevented the Dark Age in Europe was that there was still education during this time period. A monk, Richter, in Journey to Chartres, 10th Century, said, “While engaged in the study of the liberal arts, I wanted very much to logic through the works of Hippocrates (an ancient philosopher)” (Doc. E). Even in this time period of negativity, there were people who still wanted to be educated. This quote proves that there was still
During the period after the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, Europe experienced a time known as the Dark Ages. During this time period, much of the knowledge that had been learned was lost. Political control was transferred to barbaric invaders, such as the Goths, Vandals, and Huns. These groups destroyed many buildings and artworks that had existed during the time of the Roman Empire. Most people were illiterate, and much of the previously learned knowledge was lost (“Dark Ages”). However, arts and knowledge still flourished in the East.
The pictures (document A)show that before Humanism, the art was more religous. It shows that one painting is about baby Jesus on his mother Mary’s lap. After Humanism the art was about more worldly things,it shows on the same document that the Mona Lisa was a painting about a Merchant’s wife. There was new ways visually the artists would paint(document A) showing that the one from the renaissance would have more details. It shows that the newer painting has three-dimensional figures and shows the smile on the woman’s face with the straight hairline. While in comparison to the other the second painting is more complex and detailed.Humanism has changed the way people
The famous masterpiece Mona Lisa created by the late great Leonardo da Vinci was a
The Great Famine and the Black Death each caused millions of deaths, and each in its way demonstrated in dramatic fashion the existence of new vulnerabilities in Western European society (Nelson). Together they subjected the population of medieval Europe to tremendous strains, leading many people to challenge old institutions and doubt traditional values, and, by so doing, these calamities altered the path of European development in many areas (Nelson). Despite the plague and the fall of Rome during the medieval time period, it should not be known as the dark ages due to the architecture, art, and both educational and the technological advancements that came to be during this time.
The decline of great empires like the Greeks and Romans inspired the rise of a great period of time—the Italian Renaissance. The Italian Renaissance originated in the city of Florence, Italy, which gave the city a surplus of culture and religion. The Renaissance emerged after a period of time that was known as the Dark Ages and lasted from the 14th century and lasted through the 16th century. After the Roman Empire ended, it left much of Europe in a state of cultural incompetence. The Roman Empire, known as the last great empire, was a part of Classical Antiquity and its deterioration left the people of Europe without the “light” it needed to thrive. The transition from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance can be reflected through imagery. Greco-Roman culture was particularly grandiose and was one of the main reasons that Classical Antiquity lasted as long as it did. Without the strong foundation of civilization during the time Classical Antiquity, the Italian Renaissance would not have its precedent for a new era. The Italian Renaissance was an amalgamation of a shift in religious beliefs and embracing predecessors to create a time of innovation and new forms of enlightenment.
The Renaissance was a turning point for art. Many new styles and techniques emerged from this time period. Compared with the paintings of the Middle Ages, during the Renaissance, paintings became more realistic and more attention was directed to the detail of each person. Perspective and a sense of depth and space were included in the paintings. We can examine these features in the 15th century paintings of the Annunciation by Botticelli and Campin.
In history, there were two paintings that were very similar yet different. One was called the “Mona Lisa” which was painted by one of the most famous artists of the renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci. The other painting was called “Portrait of a Lady” by the flemish artist, Van der Weyden. They both were a huge influence in the art world during their lifetimes. And even after their deaths, their lives and works continue to inspire the minds and hearts of each generation.
The Dark Ages, the time period between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance, has garnered a reputation for brutality, barbarism, low quality of life, and constant fighting between warlords and tribes. This was the age of heroes and legends, of kings and kingdoms unknown. Little is known about the Dark Ages as the name suggests, but as recent generations of historians have found, The Dark Ages were not as dark as once supposed.
In choosing an artifact or a piece of art, several considerations come into mind. The MoMA, or the Museum of Modern Art, suffered a great financial crisis. This financial hiccup differentiated the ways in which the selection of new art and artifacts was to be chosen. The art or artifacts, for the MoMA, were to be financially aiding for the museum in order to keep it running (Source A). However, there are those in which the sole purpose for a museum is for educational purpose, in which the only consideration for choosing art would be that the art represents a positive outlook on education. The considerations, therefore, are ones which highly rely on the type of museum, person, and audience. It is with these factors that the most important considerations must be distinguished. Furthermore, museum’s main purpose is the presentation of a piece to an audience, and with this in mind, educational
The Renaissance was a time when people began to think and see things differently. It was a time for new innovations. People wanted to study the past and learn more about culture. People began to see important in human emotion, and they began to see that there was much more rather than just religion. Europe was facing many problems like the Black Death. But the problems caused a shift in the world view of people in 14th century Italy. During the early 1400’s, Europe witnessed a major rebirth of fine art painting, sculpture, drawing and architecture. Early Renaissance art had its birth of creativity and development in Florence, Italy, which eventually spread to Western Europe. Italy contained the status of being the richest trading nation with both Europe and the Orient, Italy was fortunate to be left with a huge repository of classical ruins and artifacts. In almost every town and city, examples of Roman architecture and sculpture, including copies of sculptures from Ancient Greece, had been familiar for centuries. The decline of Constantinople and the capital of the Byzantine Empire caused many Greek scholars to go to Italy, bringing knowl...
During 14th and 15th century artists still worked under the guild system: to study art, younger students would become apprentices to accomplished artists and like any other occupation from blacksmithing and cooking, paining is nothing too respected by the society. Paintings didn’t give much space for artists to apply their imaginations and express their feelings. Instead, artists should painted artworks according to the special requirements of their patrons. However, during the Da Vinci’s age, the status of artists began to change as the Renaissance expanded its influence. The revival of artist encouraged people, especially artists to shed the restraint of theocracy and pursue humanism. What’s more, the city Florence Da Vinci lived in was the main platform for Renaissance. The increasingly free politics and democratic social context also fused energy into the creation of artworks. As it can be seen, the portrait of Mona Lisa glorifies the image of human beings and no longer like the serious picture of God, the main character of the painting is a worldly
When the Black Death arrived in Europe in 1347, it completely overtook the country and left nothing but chaos. Europe was desperate for a rebirth. Luckily, a new beginning of the modern world arose, the Renaissance. Not only was this a new era for Europe, but also a great turning point in Western intellectual and cultural tradition due to changes in multiple, important subjects
Art has been around for centuries, and yet there are still questions that remain about the true meaning of the object. Who truly gets that last say so about what the artist was trying to depict out of the picture, is it the audience or the artist himself? While conducting research online there has been numerous controversial pictures and paintings that came up for various reasons, merely the main three topics were about sex, religion, and politics. Of course, there has been discrepancies on religious pictures, as there are several religions, simply put the one painting with multiple variations to my surprise, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. While in grade school, there are numerous schools that focus on this picture as a simple art project, therefore, reading the different opinion of people and the history behind it, is a world that no person could be prepared to walk through.
