David is a poem written by Canadian poet Earle Birney. The poem’s namesake, David, is a surveyor climbing the mountains with his friend, Bobby. Birney portrays him to be proficient, courageous and pragmatic. In the poem, David is shown to be proficient. He possesses enough skill to take risks and make it, often helping Bobby get by in the mountains. David takes the lead when climbing: “and David showed me / How to use the give of shale for giant incredible / Strides.” and again, “Till David clung with his left to a dint in the scarp, / Lobbed the iceaxe over the rocky lip, / Slipped from his holds and hung by the quivering pick, Twisted his long legs up into space and kicked / To the crest. During their climb, Bobby’s foot gave, putting him into immediate danger. David did not hesitate to come and save him: “David turned sharp and reached out his arm and steadied me / Turning again with a grin and his lips ready / To jest.” (ll. 94-95) The poet reveals David’s braveness by having him grab Bobby’s hand, helping him without a second thought. In a situation like this where his life could be over with one wrong move, David does not show hesitation, immediately coming to the rescue anyway. Furthermore, Birney portrays David as realistic. After falling from fifty feet high and having a rock thrust in his back, David knows his chances of survival chances are slim: “Perhaps … For what? A wheelchair, / Bob?” and again, “I looked / At last in his eyes. He breathed, ‘I’d do it for you, Bob.’ ” (ll. 133-134 and 151-152) Birney reveals how realistic David is through his words. Both him and Bobby know that it would take days for help to come, and whether David would be still be alive by then is uncertain. He wants Bobby to push him over, knowing what to expect if he remained by the ledge
