Data interchange standards are types of standards in healthcare that seeks to standardize the messaging, communication and integration of applications and systems not only nationwide but internationally. As mentioned in the text there are several types of data interchange standards, but there are four main ones that have been “recognized as important.” These four standards are Health Level Seven (HL7) standards, Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM), National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) and ANSI ASC X12N standards. (Wagner, Glaser, Lee, 2013)

I’ve selected to go more in detail about the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP). This program is very important to have and continues to grow and change with emerging technologies. The NCPDP is an ANSI-accredited non-profit organization that creates standards, particularly for the pharmacy industry. The NCPDP represents “every sector of the pharmacy industry” and provides a platform where members can come together to discuss business solutions, including ANSI accredited standards and discussions for promoting information exchanges related to medications, supplies, and services. ANSI stands for the American Nation Standards Institute which has requirements in place that organization must meet to become ANSI accredited. The NCPDP has established the foundation of what is acceptable and how data information needs to be exchanged. This is important because with so many different organizations and payers nationally and internationally, it would be chaos without some sort of uniform language and standard. By implementing the NCPDP standard it has decreased healthcare costs by billions of dollars, reduced patient medication errors, promotes education to patients on high-risk drugs and has changed prescription labeling to prevent users from
