The movie Dante's Peak is portraying a volcanic eruption of a composite volcano in the small town of Dante’s Peak. The movie shows events that normally happen throughout a volcanic explosion and how the main characters escape. Dante’s Peak displayed various scenes for the viewers in this case myself, to believe it was unrealistic. Some parts of the volcanic eruption in the movie were believable, but most were unrealistic. The movie exaggerates many of the events that occur during the eruption. The movie showed many warning signs that actually occur before a volcanic eruption, but they were a bit exaggerated. A hot spring is shown in the movie as a warning sign, which is a result of the magma moving toward the surface. In the beginning of the movie it shows that two people swimming in a hot spring, and after a couple minutes the temperature suddenly changed and they were burned alive. Temperature changes can definitely occur, so that is accurate. Although the temperature usually does change, it can take days or weeks to develop, rather than a few seconds as shown in the movie. Volcanic forecasts are more accurate then earthquake predictions. These predictions are generally forecast in the same way as an earthquake (temperature increases in geothermic waters gaseous concentrations, changes in elevation of land and water etc… Because we generally know where Volcanoes are, we can predict when an eruption may take place.
So what events led up to this violent eruption? A scientist used qualitative and quantitative data to reconstruct a timeline. Three years prior to the April 1815 years the volcano began to rumble and generate a dark cloud around the summit. Then in the early evening of April 5th 1815 there was a moderate-sized eruption. The detonations sounded like the discharge of cannons and could be heard as far away as Ternate, 1400km away (Stothers, 1984). A man by the name of Sir Stamford Raffles heard these sounds wrote:

Inferno is only a piece of a much larger story written by Dante Alighieri. The entire story is called the Divine Comedy, which is composed of Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Together these three pieces tell the story of Dante's journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise; something that is easily discernible through reading the titles of each part. Dante wrote these poems somewhere around the year 1300. Originally written in what Dante referred to as Latin, there have been many different translations of his Divine Comedy. This has cause some variations in small details of the text, but the main story has stayed the same. Dante was highly involved in some political conflicts at the time which influenced some of his writing. The one thing that influenced Dante more than anything else in his writing was love. His love for the love of his life Beatrice was never ending. It was completely amazing how much he loved her. Now especially in Inferno it would definitely seem like love does not play a major part in the story. It does, love is the main reason the journey is imparted upon in the first place. A major but very overlooked theme in Dante's Inferno is love.
The Garden of Earthly Delights painted by Hieronymus Bosch, depicts many vivid fictional scenes in triptych style. The right wing of the triptych depicts Hell and the causes of man's downfall, which Dante wrote about in the Inferno. Dante tries to convey to all humanity the consequences of human actions and the levels of hell that he believes exist for different levels of sins. Dante divides Hell up into ten different circles, and there is an upper and a lower level of Hell. Dante and Bosch have similar views on the evil within people and this evil is represented in their works, whether it transpires in a painting or in a book.
Many of us know Mount Shasta to be a beautiful mountain and a popular tourist location in California. However, this mountain is much more than that, this mountain is actually a volcano. Volcanoes come with a number of hazards and a volcano of this size is of no exception. Previous eruptions on Mount Shasta have given us an idea of the power this volcano has and the damage it may do. With this information scientists are able to predict what may happen should another explosion occur.
The eruption on Mount Saint Helens has a specific cause and comes with many effects. A multifold of people would say that the “mountain looked like the site of an atomic blast” (Bredeson 30). That is a very accurate depiction as it took great power to inflict as much damage as it did. The reason for this impressive amount of force is that when magma is built up with pressure and an earthquake hits, the pressure gets magnified and the volcano explodes (Lewis). This is exactly what happened inside Mount Saint Helens. Furthermore, it has been revealed that “The earthquake that triggered the explosion was a 5.2 on the Richter scale” (Gunn 559). The earthquake to the magma can be compared as a match to gasoline. Even though the earthquake was not huge, the scale of the eruption was much greater than that of the earthquake (Gunn 560). The earthquake was only the trigger that allowed for more devastating things to occur. Fantastic elements occur in both Dante’s Inferno and The Tales of Sinbad but it is obvious that Inferno uses a lot more of the fantastic than Sinbad. In Dante’s Inferno, there are several fictional creatures (Cereberus, the Furies, Geryon) in the realms of hell, which all serve a specific purpose in hell and in Dante’s journey through the depths of hell. Through Sinbad’s journey, we see a lesser quantity of fantastic creatures, but, similar to Dante’s Inferno, the creatures that appear in Sinbad’s voyages all serve a purpose to the plot of the story. The main connection that both Dante and Sinbad have in relation to the use of the fantastic in their journeys is the purpose of the fantastic creatures themselves—they serve to cause death among others, but oftentimes are the sources that help advance the plot of the poem forward.
These differences are in the makeup of the volcano, the impact on society, and the eruption itself. Mount Saint Helens, used to be a wonder of the world, but now a damage site of what happened on May 18, 1980. Mauna Loa is a tourist destination and one of the most active dispensers of lava and magma in the world. As shown, these volcanoes can’t be more different. Named for the Roman god Vulcan, volcanoes have both intrigued and frightened mankind for centuries. Human-like footprints dating back 300,000 years have been found in the solidified lava of Roccamonfina volcano in Italy (Onion, 2013). These footprints, called the "Devil's Trail" appear to indicate that these ancestors were escaping an eruption. In Turkey, a 9,000 year old painting depicting a volcanic eruption was discovered in 1964 during an excavation of Catalhyuk (Oskin, B., 2012). Perhaps one of the most famous written accounts of a volcanic eruption was written in 79 A.D. when Pliny the Younger wrote of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy.

Dante spent his life traveling from court to court both lecturing and writing down his experiences. His Divine Comedy – the three-part epic poem consisting of Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso (Hell, Purgatory and Heaven)– is generally regarded as one of the greatest poetic feats ever accomplished. All three parts are incredible literary feats with symbolism so complex and beautiful that scholars are still unraveling all the details today. However, this essay will focus on the first part of Dante’s work, Inferno, which consists of 34 cantos. Dante’s Inferno is a masterpiece of allegorical imagery where Virgil represents human reason, Beatrice love and hope, and Dante mankind on the journey of the human soul through life to reach salvation.
“Midway along the journey of our life” (Canto 1) Dante the Pilgrim says at the beginning of his journey. Through out the comedy and the Pilgrims vision of hell, I believe he was truly on a journey of self-discovery. Dante encountered a guide to help him in his journey throughout the nine circles of hell. Going deeper and deeper into hell Dante realized many different sins that he could have committed in his life and realized the things that he did not need anymore. Base on the end of his journey I believe that Dante truly found himself and found a new person within himself.
