What you see in this painting is a man attacking a man. What I mean by this is the man is literally biting the neck of the other man. I can say it was a symbolism of the vampire. It is known this painting is known as the “demon gloats” which basically means that Dante falls into the gates of hell lead by Dante. The reason why Vigil falls into this is because he was hopeless. They enter this world and soon become aware of how it truly is by suffering and the worms lap their blood. They suffered a whole lot but that’s because they didn’t know god existed so they refuge in the hell gates. So basically, this painting symbolizes the gates of hell and how two men fell into it and deeper on it in each for not being hopeful. Their souls left their bodies and continued being condemned.
