The United States is in a tough position as far as politics go, there is a massive hindrance in the form of political parties. For many years now there has been a two party system, this has never been a good idea nor has it really worked. The ideas of the people haven’t been completely represented, there has been issues with getting necessary bills passed, and there is the issue of people not really knowing what a candidate stands for just what the party stands for. All of these issues, need to be changed and the only way to do so is to start and abolish the party system. The two party system has encouraged the idea that voting for anyone who is not ‘blue’ or ‘red’ is a wasted vote. This can be seen in the lack of votes that 3rd party candidates are getting, for example in 2012 between the three third party candidates there was a total of 1,570,767 votes.(IVN) This could be because only a little more than half of the voting age population actually voted. (GMU) Or it could be to the lack of media coverage that they get. Third party candidates, or any candidate for that matter need to get at least 5% of the vote in a general election to get equal ballot access and federal funding like the two big parties. Another reason this idea of a wasted vote comes through is because no one knows what these other parties stand for they just hear what people on CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News say about them. For instance the libertarian party has been deemed nothing more than a bunch of pot smoking hippies just because they want to legalize marijuana. The big media outlets don’t look at the party as a whole and find one unpopular opinion they have and bash it into the skulls of their viewers as the truth. Our political system is our backbone, so we need to buckle down and start working together, learning from our past mistakes. In his article, “Elston He on Abolishing Political Parties” Elston He gives his opinion about political parties, “Political parties were created to express common views, to propose a common platform, and to unify members of American political society so that action could be taken. Today, however, political parties are simply used as perfunctory labels and to categorize people as “this or that”. This is a good statement to show just how divided America has become. We as a country should abolish all political parties and run as a whole instead of separately as enemies because, together we are stronger then we are apart, government formation should be built upon honesty and integrity not lies, and political parties will only lead to disaster.
The biggest problem in America today is that the party line has been drawn over our lives, drawn down the center of the nation, drawn through our homes and families. Rather than Republicans and Democrats agreeing on a vision of America but disagreeing on the means to achieve it, the two parties point their fingers, call their opponents names, and declare the other side unpatriotic. The Republicans are running on a platform of “the Democrats will destroy America”, while the Democrats do practically nothing at all, proud to not be Republicans. And we, the people, call them leaders. We, the people, elected them. We, the people, make their jobs easy because we, the people whom they have sworn to serve, don’t question them.
In the United States today, a third major political party is needed. The two current major parties are inadequate due to a lack of representation of the people, and recurrent stalemates that occur when a controversial decision has to be made. Adding a third major party would help with the voting decisions, representation of the people, and the government overall.
No other party has won an election due to this system. Third parties can’t run good campaigns because they have access to fewer resources unlike the dominant two parties. The candidates that usually run for Republican or Democrats usually have money to run a good campaign. Also, they have supporters that help them financially because they’re more popular with the public. They get these supporters from their attention from the press. The candidates that run for third parties usually are just people who are not as rich as the major two parties. So, in turn, they don’t have the money to run a campaign as good as others (Rosenstone, 1984). Also, they don’t get the needed press from magazines such as the New York Times (Conroy, 2013). Without this attention from press, they can’t get a lot of big time supporters. According to Rosenstone (1984), Sometimes third parties even drop out because they get discouraged. People who are apart of these third parties usually don’t waste their time voting for them because they believe they’re not going to win.
