Even though other dancers may disagree that dancing shouldn’t have to be fun, the journey to achieve fame is the only mentality to reach self-betterment for some people. Dance is a sport and some believe that we should treat it how most competitive sports are like. Similar to the competitive world of sports, many athletes train and practice to strive for one goal and that is to capture the gold medal. The only way a person can get better is if an individual goes through the thick and thin direction and having an attitude of becoming the best. On the other hand, those who choose dance as their career depend on the occupation financially. Professional dancers are constantly reminded that performing arts is also a business that dancers make a
The article, “You Have To Love Dancing To Stick To It”, written by Merce Cunningham was exceptionally relatable amongst the group discussion with the dancers. The structure of this article was much like a poem. Depending upon the reader, each section could be broken down into different ideas. Merce Cunninhams’s background consist of beginning as a tap dancer, studying with Martha Graham, and commenced the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 1953. He choreographed pieces outside of the theater and collaborated on filmdances, videodances, and instrumental in the development of computer programs for dance (90). Referring back to his choreographic skills, Cunningham is an artist that not everyone enjoyed. His focus was directed to seperating the human being from their actions.
The pressure sometimes builds so high that the dancer becomes unhappy and feels the need to do whatever it is to keep their parents happy. This can include developing an eating disorder, such as bulimia, or depression. As a dancer I saw all of these things first hand. Being backstage all that is heard is the voices of the few parents who are just telling their kids over and over that they need to be the best and perform the best out of the whole group of 100 or more people. When the parents would finally leave, many of the girls backstage with me would get so nervous and anxious about their performance and pleasing their parents that they would then go vomit in the bathroom.
Have you ever been in so much pain but have to smile and work your way through it while keeping your posture upright,or love something so much that even if the teachers seem like military sergeants you still want to go and do that one specific thing; ballet dancers go through that everyday just to come out on top.
Dance is easily the reason why I should stop functioning and breathing, yet it is the exact reason why I do. I never seem to be good enough to keep dancing, yet every time I step on that stage, I somehow become so much more talented than I could ever imagine. It is so easy to get lost in the swarm of emotions in dance, time is no object when the music is perfect and everything feels just right. Time is so easily lost when I would sit on my bedroom floor and cry because I am just not good enough to pull this dance off. Time is so easily lost when I spend hours watching dance video after dance video, to get that timing just right. And time is so easily lost, watching the same stupid eight count over and over, to just understand why I can’t do
Dance is a word heard all too often in my household, with two sisters that dance, a mum that danced, and two cousins that danced professionally overseas. I often find myself wondering why I never took part in the sport that defines my family. After much thought, I deduced the main reason I don’t participate in dance is simply because I enjoy more friendly, teamwork orientated competition, however, through this process I came to realise several barriers which affects the access and equity of dance to several members of society.
The other day I was talking to a lady who had her PhD in dance. She was able to teach dance all over the world, and she became a professor. The reality is that many people who get degrees in dance don't end up making all that much money, and if they dance professionally it's hard to keep up as they get older, the younger generation just has too much energy and agility to compete with, and your knees only hold out for so long. Not just for dance, you can ask any professional athlete. Speaking of which very few ever make the grade, but let's talk about that for a second shall we?
I already know what it is like to be a dancer and the pressures that get put on us: the need to be the best and strive for a perfection that is simply never possible. We work constantly to be better,
Careers in the performing arts are not sought as being monetarily lucrative, but I choose to believe that is the opportunity cost for having a career that creates so much to affect today’s society. I aspire to have a career in dance because I get to have a balance of strength and grace, the two components I deem necessary for navigating daily life.
I’ve been dancing all my life. As a kid, my parents signed up for countless dancing lessons thinking I’d become a professional dancer. In freshmen year, I joined the dance team in my high school and it soon became a big part of my life. I practice five days a week after school to 7 o’clock pm and sometimes even on the Saturdays early in the morning to noon time. My life revolved around the team, therefore, I had no time outside of the team and sometimes barely time for food. Around May or April of each season, we went on competitions every Saturdays and that is when things go intense. In my junior year, we competed in the jazz category, which I learned within four weeks because I had a broken arm. There was a trick in the routine where three people had to lift me up and do a flip with a perfect landing. I competed in that routine for the first time, and the trick was not successful because there wasn’t enough practice. I did it over again at every competitions; I finally made it at State
With this experience in mind, I hope to look into my future with an open mind about my success. I can still be successful and make it in society without having been number one at everything. ‘Making it’ does not always mean getting your way. If I would live my life always "winning", I would never have a challenge, a mistake, or a time to learn from. Finding something that makes a person happy is the best part about life. After my experiences with dancing, I have been taught many lessons that will play key roles in the hopeful development of my future. Now, I am on a quest for success, keeping in mind that making it in society as a successful woman does not mean being the best at everything.
Rumi once said,“Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.” Many schools give students the chance to do different activities like dancing, singing, or acting as an educational activity. I enjoy dance the most out of those activities because I can release stress, collaborate with peers, and be creative.
Every year, collegiate hip-hop dance crews hold auditions to bring in new talented dancers onto their teams. Despite whether you’ve been training in dance all your life, just a couple years, or you’ve never done such a thing before, you might want to give it a shot at auditioning for a team that will sky-rocket your dancing abilities. Before we get started, remember, the number one rule; don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and embarrass yourself if you don’t believe you’re as fantastic as them. Just show them what you got. Trust me, the dance community will probably be the nicest, funniest, and most talented group of people you’ll probably ever meet.
Like we’ve mentioned above, the dancer can wholly captivate the audience and make them feel the passion the dancer has for his or her craft.
To many, dance is only an art. In reality, dance is much more. It 's an art, a sport, a way to express one’s self, a way to exercise, a way to get feelings out. Since the beginning of time, humans have used different types of dance to express themselves. There are many advantages to dancing, however there are also some disadvantages. Dance is one of the most physically and cognitively demanding sports.
...to young generation as a good example of being devoted and willing person to learn more about in the field of dancing. As we all know that dancing never dies because it is like a legend that will never vanished because of the great follower who also wants to learn from it. And as an example, I am one of these persons who actually dedicate the entire life just because of dancing. That as I dance, I always feel the contentment and excitement that it gave to me as a performer and at the same time a dancer that God has given and rewarded to me. I’m so very blessed to have this kind of talent because it helps me to achieve what I wanted to be to help my family who loved and cared for me always.
