DMX- “Slippin’”
The song “Slippin’ “ by artist DMX uses tone, theme and imagery. DMX’s purpose for writing this song was to convey the theme how life in the streets is, and how you can over come life with drugs if you give it all you got. The song begins with the speaker talking about problems he is having with his mom, and that’s when he decides to run away from home. Then it moves on to when he is on the streets by himself, and that is when his problems begin to worsen.
In the first stanza, the speaker starts talking about the problem he is having with his mom. He then decides to leave his house. When he leaves his house he thinks its going to be easy to live alone in the streets and that is when he uses imagery and says “I’m gonna be that seed that doesn’t need much to succeed “. He then finds out that life in the streets is not so easy and that’s when he says, “ I’m ready for the world, or at least I thought I was… “In this stanza he also uses tone when he says, “ DAMN, was it my fault something I did….”? Here he is asking himself if it was his fault that his father had left him at age 7 and why did his father leave.
In the chorus the speaker uses the phrase ….“I’m Slippin’ , I’m fallin’, I can’t get up”, which means that the speaker is loosing every hope that will help him survive through all the problems he has. The speaker also uses theme in the chorus when he says, “See, to live is to suffer, but to survive, well, that’s to find meaning in the suffering.” He uses theme here because he is saying that to him life is nothing but suffering and if you survive the suffering, its just to find meaning in it.
In the middle of the song the speaker talks about how he hit rock bottom. He says that in three years he started showing signs of stress, that he didn’t care how he looked and he didn’t care about anybody. He says that he “Would get high to get by” or in other words he would get high to forget about the problems he had.
Finally at the end of the song he talks about how his life started to change with the help of his friends.
In line five and six, the male feels so down and intimidated and could not do anything. In the third stanza, in line one to four we see that the male tries to change the present state but it does not seem to bear fruit. In line six and seven the female is still dominating the male.
There are a lot of Epic Poems written in Literature that intrigue, and capture reader’s attention like; The Iliad, The Odyssey, Beowulf, and the Divine Comedy. Never had the Hip-Hop culture had an epic story of its own until Lupe Fiasco came along. Lupe created a 17 song saga Called “Michael Young History (MYH) also known as The Cool” spread throughout his first two albums, and a few mixtapes. MYH is a frictional rap character who was raised by a single hard-working mother who struggle to raise Michael and his loving sister. With the lack of parental guidance the promising, intelligent young Michael turn into a drug deal. Michaels love for the street, and fame sent him to a road of greed, deception. In no time Michael had control of his neighborhood making money, bribing dirty cops to look away from his crimes. As Michael unethical fame rise his friends get jealous, setting Michael to end his life. Unless a music listener is not a Lupe Fiasco fan they will not be aware of this
Stanza three again shows doubtfulness about the mother’s love. We see how the mother locks her child in because she fears the modern world. She sees the world as dangers and especially fears men. Her fear of men is emphasized by the italics used. In the final line of the stanza, the mother puts her son on a plastic pot. This is somewhat symbolic of the consumeristic society i.e. manufactured and cheap.
The narrator is presented as this strong figure at first, but the piece tears away this wall brick by brick. In stanza six when they are coming back from Mexico, the narrator says the drugs “might help him live longer.” The biggest turn of hopelessness is in stanza 8 for the narrator. His brother falls into a coma and his brother’s lover cries in his arms and he “Wonder(s) how much longer you will be able to be strong.”(Lassell 481) It only progresses only further when the narrator says: “Offer God anything to bring your brother back. Know you have nothing God could possibly want.”(Lassell 481) The narrator becomes almost emotionless during the funeral of his brother, and it shows that this sense of hopelessness has grown even larger, to the fact where he stands in silence and stares at the casket. During the funeral, he thinks to himself “Know that your brother 's life was not what you imagined.”(Lassell
In the first stanza we are captivated by hope, because it “dangles on a string” before us, not quite in our grasp, because even though we are aware of it, we do not fully have a handle on what it means to be hopeful (1). This is then said to be like “slow-spinning redemption” (2). Again, this is because we do not fully appreciate redemption. We can see it before us, in many different lights, hence spinning, but we do not really understand what makes redemption what it is. Because we do not comprehend the concepts of hope and redemption they “rope us in” and “mesmerize” us (5, 6). We spend a lot of time in our youth...
A lot of times, people find music a great way to express how they feel. Perhaps they cannot find the words to explain how they feel but a song can put it perfectly. Songs can tell a story, give a message, or simply be a nice beat to dance to. In the song, “Same Drugs” by Chance the Rapper, he tells a story of someone he grew up with who has since changed now that they are adults. Talking about the simplicity of when they were kids and now they are adults. Comparing their relationship to the story of Peter Pan, he uses the lines, “When did you change? Wendy, you’ve aged,” to express them growing up, aging, and changing (Chance The Rapper). He compares his old childhood friend to Wendy and compares himself to Peter Pan. Although it is easy to believe this song is about drugs, this song is not about drugs. Not only is this song enjoyable to listen to, but listening to the story allows people to relate. Using Peter Pan to compare to

The sixth stanza is where the narrator is talking to her son. She tells him that his father would give lands for one. She is telling her son that if his father really wanted to, he would take him and would leave her (the narrator) with nothing.
In the second and last stanza of the poem we are reminded that he was but a child. The thought of losing the berries “always made him feel like crying” the thought of all that beauty gone so sour in the aftermath of lust. The lack of wisdom in younger years is emphasized by the common childish retort of “It wasn’t fair.” He kept up the childish hope that this time would be different, that this time the berries would keep and that the lust, work, and pain might not have been in vain, that others would not “glut” upon what he desired.
On the second stanza, the woman was haunted by the voices of her child in her mind. She said that under the circumstance she is right now, she has no choice but to have a abortion. Then she express her feeling and felt sorry about what she had done. “And your lives from your unfinished reach, If I stole your births and your names, Your straight baby tears and your games” (Gwendolyn Brooks) she show remorse that she stolen her child life and her child would get to experience the first tear and games. So now her baby already going through death.

The relevance of the song was portraying that using drugs and alcohol will help you escape life situations. Regardless of how hard or tough it is. All you need to do is to get drunk or get high, than your problems will flush away. But the video don’t explain the reality of the outcome of how drugs and alcohol will or could affect your lifestyle and how it could lead you to lose your job, family and life. The second four lines also describe the father s emotions as they move from sadness to anger, and from anger he moves quickly into a realization that he had no control over the situation. He is angry at the world, himself, and the situation that he is now in. The line, Exacted by thy fate, on the just day seems to be his only form of solace in the midst of anger (Line 4). He speaks of God and His plan and how it supercedes the plans o...
...guage and diction demonstrates the harsh truth in evading one’s problems as a solution. Behind the positive and uplifting tone which brings life and joy to someone who hasn’t felt such emotions for so long, the introspectively honest and melancholy truth shines as the real meaning behind the song. Overall, while it is beneficial to free oneself from societal standards that inhibit being true to one’s morals and values, man cannot sincerely “let the storm rage on” (8.6) without suffering nor acknowledging its presence. While one can, for a time, feel free and boundless from the fears that they outrun, they are not really free from their anxieties, and it will always be there to hinder them from actually letting go. Ultimately, in order to be truly comfortable with oneself and genuinely let go of past inhibitions, one must find the courage to face their storm inside.
