Lineage in Beowulf was present when the story talked about the history of Kings behind Hrothgar. It majorly affected the lives of both Hrothgar and Beowulf. Hrothgar had a very strong lineage which included victorious and loved Kings, which in turn helped him sustain his job as King of the Danes For example, first ruler over the Danes was Shild. “Shilds reign had been long;he’d ruled them well.”(l.31,Ch.4) The great king had also bore a prince named Beo. When Hrothgar did finally address the situation, he made Beowulf kill Grendel instead of doing it himself. Though this is a clear sign of cowardness, especially from a king, Hrothgar stayed in power and remained beloved by his people. This was mainly do to Hrothgar's lineage and the strong reputation Hrothgar's family had brought him. The Danes probably did not want to interfere with such a fixed line of honor. As for Beowulf, if it were not for his lineage, he may have not had any connection with Hrothgar and the rest of the Danes. For example, Beowulf is friends with Hrothgar as a result of Hrothgar protecting his father Edgetho because he paid off Edgetho’s feud after killing Hathlaf, a Wulfing warrior. Hrothgar tells Beowulf “you’ve come to us in friendship, and because of the reception your father found at our court.”(l.457-458 Ch.7) In other words, Hrothgar is saying the reason Beowulf had come to the Danes in friendship is due to Hrothgar helping Beowulf's father. Therefore, if it weren't for Beowulf’s father(lineage), there would have been no one to stop
