John Steinbeck introduces us to Curley’s wife during the middle of Chapter 3. Curley’s wife is a complex and only female character in the novel: ‘Of mice and men’. Her nativity and flirtatiousness leads to her inevitable death at the hand of Lennie.
Curley’s wife is called ‘Curley’s wife’ throughout the whole novel. Her name confirms she is an object of possession rather than a person in her own right. The apostrophe in ‘Curley’s wife’ is possessive and has no identity of her own.
She is firstly introduced by Candy, the swamper, who describes her from his perspective to the new ranch workers by calling her “a tart”. The word “tart” means a woman considered to be sexually promiscuous. This links in with her always using the excuse “I’m looking for Curley”, as a way to be around the other male ranch works. Moreover the negative thought that Curley’s wife is introduced through gossip means the reader is almost forced into believing the pessimistic side of Curley’s wife even before she speaks. And the fact that colour red is mention several times in her description could mean she is an attention seeker and means to be intentionally seductive. In addition this also makes the reader instantly feel prejudice against her. The reason we tend to judge her as “a tart” Candy think she is, is because we’re asked why a woman would dress in such a way in a male dominated environment. However we only find out that the way she dresses like the way she does in chapter 4 is because her dream was to become a movie star “I tell ya I could of went with shows” , “...he could of put me in pitchers” she only dresses like this to experience her
