Cultural- The cultural context of driving is imperative in today's society. People spend many hours a day in their cars, and it has become a social standard to get your license at 16 years old and to own a car. Cars have also become a huge cultural and pop cultural symbol. For example, when you think of a Volkswagen T2 van most people would think of the 1960s and the hippie movement or a 1969 Doge Charger and it a person who remember the television series The Dukes of Hazzard. Lastly, in other cultures driving is very different. Their cars look different, they drive on the opposite side of the road and have different rules and social norms, and also in some cultures women are not allowed to drive. Many people take a lot of pride in their vehicle and personalize it to their liking with decorations, custom designs or auto bodywork, and some cars may have sentimental value. The occupation of driving and the physical environment of the car can be very meaningful to a person. The physical environment can also be a barrier for a person with a disability. Cars are often very compact and can be very hard to maneuver, although adaptions for cars are available. The natural environment of driving is also imperative. The natural environment can significantly impact the occupation of driving and how hard or easy it is to participate. Driving in a windy snow storm is going to look a lot different than on a beautiful sunny day. With these new advancements, it comes with many new aspects of driving such as talking or texting on the phone when driving, more distractions, GPAs, and advanced cars. Some positive aspects of the virtual environment of driving are that cars are becoming much more advanced with hands-free blue tooth communication, back up cameras, and touch screens. These make cars much more user-friendly and easier to maneuver for someone who has a disability. Some negative aspects of virtual environments are the new concerns of people texting and making phone calls when driving and also an overall increase in distracted driving.
